TOWER MEMORIAL
SHERWOOD FORESTERS (NOTTINGHAMSHIRE & DERBYSHIRE REGIMENT)
CRICH, DERBYSHIRE

The following information can be found on a memorial and various plaques,

To the memory of 11409 men of all ranks of the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire regiment) who gave their lives for their King and Country in the Great War 1914-1919 and in honour of 140.000 of their comrades who served during the war in Thirty two Battalions of the regiment. This monument is gratefully erected by the people of the counties of Nottingham and Derby to remind us of their sacrifice and our duty

To the glory of God and in honoured memory of 1520 Sherwood Foresters who gave their lives
in the War 1939-1945 and in honour of their comrades who served in 13 units of the regiment

This Memorial Tower is also dedicated to the memory of those of the Sherwood Foresters
who gave their lives in the service of their county from 1945 1970

This Memorial Tower is also dedicated to the memory of those of the
Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment who have given their lives
in the service of their county since the formation of the regiment on the 28th February 1970

Jessop Martin Kane, Private 24521357, Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters, 20.9.1982 aged 19 Killed in rocket attack on observation post at Springfield Road, Royal Ulster Constabulary Police Station joint Army base, Belfast.

Bush Leon Anthony, Corporal 24428757, Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters, killed on 27/09/1982 aged 22 by booby trap bomb attached to security barrier, West Circular Road, Highfield, Belfast. Buried at Mansfield Woodhouse Cemetery, Leeming Lane North, Nottinghamshire

McGonigle, Stephen Russell. Lance Corporal 24366203, Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters. Killed in land mine attack whilst on foot patrol in Silverbridge, near Crossmaglen, County Armagh, on the 4.5.1989 aged 30. Buried at New Ollerton Cemetery, Forest Road, Newark, Nottinghamshire

Afghanistan
Sandford Paul Anthony, Lance Corporal 25124644, Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters was killed while taking part in an offensive patrol with his company aimed at disrupting Taliban forces in the Upper Gereshk Valley area of Helmand Province, eight kilometres north east of the town of Gereshk. on the 6 June 2077, aged 23. Buried in Hucknall Cemetery, Broomhill Road, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire


Wright Thomas Michael, Drummer 25160800, Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters, was killed roughly six kilometres outside of Lashkar Gah in Helmand province. His armoured 'Snatch' land rover was escorting a military team surveying the site for a new road project linking several Afghan villages in the Babaji area when it was caught in an explosion on the 24.6.2007

Dolan Sean, Captain 565016, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment, died as a result of a mortar round in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Saturday, 30 June 2007 aged 40. Buried in St Lawrence Churchyard, Stoak, Chester, Cheshire

The soldiers, both from the 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters), were taking part in a routine reassurance patrol 17km north of Lashkar Gah when, shortly after 0915 hours local time, on the 5.9.2007, the Land Rover vehicle they were travelling in was caught in an explosion. Sadly they were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Botha Johan. Private 25205580, 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters), 8.9.2007 aged 25.. Buried in Petersfield Cemetery, Springs, Johannesberg, South Africa

Brelsford Craig Anthony. (Military Cross), Colour Sergeant 25097521, 2nd Mercian Regiment 8.9.2007 aged 25. Buried in Chilwell Cemetery, Field Lane, Chilwell, Nottinghamshire
Sergeant Brelsford and Private Botha were taking part in a pre-planned operation to disrupt Taliban activity, south of Garmsir, southern Helmand Province, when their patrol was attacked by enemy fighters shortly after 0045 hours local time. Sadly Sergeant Brelsford and Private Botha were both killed during the subsequent heavy firefight to repel the enemy.



Newman Phillip Wayne. Colour Sergeant 24950948, 4th Mercian Regiment, died aged 36. Buried Dyers Lane Cemetery, Wolston, near Coventry
and
Tunnicliffe Bran John, Private 24955390, 2nd Mercian Regiment died aged 33. both died 20.9.2007
Both soldiers were deployed on Operation Palk Wahel with A (Grenadier) Company 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) and were conducting an essential re-supply during a pause in the fighting.
They were travelling in a Pinzgauer 4X4, 5km south west of their patrol base in an area north of Gereshk, on their way to a rendezvous point as part of a two vehicle replenishment patrol. The vehicle over-turned and tragically landed on its roof in an irrigation channel. One other passenger was able to escape without injury. Despite all of the efforts of the patrol, a medical officer, engineers and a quick reaction force who were on the scene within minutes, sadly Colour Sergeant Newman and Private Tunnicliffe were unable to be saved.
