Cretan partisans pose for a photograph following the Axis invasion of the island....For the first time during war, German forces faced in Crete a valiant resistance from the local civilian population when they invaded in May 1941. Civilians on Crete: men, women and even children, picked off Axis paratroopers or attacked them with knives, axes, scythes, clubs or even bare hands in a show of resistance that would become legendary.
