Hello
I hope you won’t be offended but I think your suggestion that the Bernard Brown commemorated on the memorial served with the Yorkshire Regiment is questionable. I cannot reconcile his place of birth and residence with Alton. After some further research I found another Bernard Brown on the 1901 Census who was born in Alton in 1893, the son of Benjamin and Ann Brown. I feel he is likely to be the one named on the memorial. He is recorded in SDGW as follows:

Name:
Bernard Brown

Birth Place:
Alton, Staffs

Residence:
Alton, Staffs

Death Date:
3 Jul 1916

Death Place:
France and Flanders

Enlistment Place:
Stoke-on-trent

Rank:
Private

Regiment:
North Staffordshire (Prince of Wales's) Regiment

Battalion:
8th Battalion

Regimental Number:
12480

Type of Casualty:
Killed in action

Theatre of War:
Western European Theatre

Regards

Made contact with active1 and matter will be corrected. Great to have folks picking up on these anomalies.
