1914-1918
BARBER James, Sergeant, 68852, 135th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 19th April 1918 aged 31. Son of James and Bertha Barber, of Cheddleton, Staffs. Commemorated on the Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France

BLAKEMAN William Walter. Private 3279, 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment killed in action 13 October 1915. Born at Sandbach, Cheshire in 1896 to James and Jessie of (1911) Tan yard, Cheddleton employed as a silk dryer lad. His mother was granted a war gratuity 24 February 1916 revised 6 July 1919. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.

BOUCHER, Bazil Edward Cresswell, Lieutenant, 1st Royal Welch Fusiliers of Heath House, Cheddleton died 10th May 1919 age 21 at the Royal Salop Infirmary, Shrewsbury. Son of Edward Cresswell Boheen Boucher and Katherine A of Heath House, Chedleton Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Croc di Guerra (Italy) At rest in St Edward the Confessor churchyard, Cheddleton, Staffordshire

CHELL Fred, Private 2647, 1st Royal Fusiliers, died 31st July 1917 aged 22. Son of William of Ferny Hill, Basford near Leek, Staffordshire. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium

COPESTAKE Fred, Private, M/316646, 1124th Motor Transport Coy, Royal Army Service Corps, died 15th February 1919 aged 30. At rest in St Edward the Confessor churchyard, Cheddleton, Staffordshire

DAWSON Charles Rowland, Private 3005, 8th North Staffordshire Regiment died of wounds 30th November 1918 aged 25. Native of Rainhill, Lancashire resident of Cheddleton, Staffordshire Husband of Emma Robinson nee Gilberts.of Cheddleton. At rest in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France

Joined up on December 1916 aged 22yrs and 8 months address given was Babylon, Cheddleton and gave his occupation as a Silk Dyers Glosser His parents were Andrew and Edna of Babylon, Cheddleton and he was born in Rainhill, Liverpool, Lancashire.
28th August 1916 he had his medical at 47, Stockwell Street, Leek and on the 8th December 1916 joined his regiment in the field in France. His marriage to Emma was on the 30th November 1913 at Cheddleton Church and they had two girls. On the 30th November 1918 whilst fighting in France he was injured and he died of wounds in No2 Australian General Hospital, France

GOLDSTRAW George, Private 12391, 8th Royal Fusiliers, killed in action 7th July 1916 aged 19. Son of Samuel Cooper Goldstraw and Jane Goldstraw, of Basford Bridge, Cheddleton. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

GOLDSTRAW William Wright, Cpl G/9499, 23rd Royal Fusiliers, killed in action 23rd March 1918 aged 28. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. Son of Samuel Cooper Goldstraw and Jane Goldstraw, of Basford Bridge, Cheddleton and brother of George. Their brother, Samuel Cooper Goldstraw survived the war. He was private 28847 Grenadier Guards. He enlisted at Stoke on Trent on the 20th December 1916 aged 24, he gave his occupation as Paper making. He embarked Southampton30th December 1917 and disembarked France same day. After going through different bases he joined his regiment in the front on the 10th January 1918 He left France on the 4th March 1919 and he left the army on the 31st March 1920 after serving 4yrs and 102days. He received a gunshot wound to his buttocks (mild) on the 24th August 1918 and was taken to 3rd Field Ambulance (Aid Post) the transferred the next day to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, France, he was the transferred to Etaples 29th August 1918 (No date when he was discharged from the hospital)

HANDLEY Albert, Pioneer, 159185, 63rd Field Coy, Royal Engineers, died 11th November 1917 aged 25. Son of Peter of 65, leek New Road, Baddeley Green, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. At in Ramscappelle Road Military Cemetery, Belgium

JOHNSON George Thomas, Private 15280, 8th North Staffordshire Regiment died 8th October 1915 aged 17. Son of Leonard Clowes and Lizzie Johnson of Homestead Bungalow, Cheddleton. Formerly of Hall House Farm, Cheddleton. His occupation prior to enlistment as a paper duster and he had is medical in Leek on the 1st September 1914 and on the same day went to North Staffords Dept in Tidworth. Buried in Rue-Des-Berceaux Military Cemetery, Richebourge-L'Avoue, France

MELLOR Christopher, Private 75920, 1/4th Northumberland Fusiliers died 27th May 1918 aged 18. Son of John and Fanny Elizabeth of Victoria Cottages, Cheddleton. Commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, France

OWEN Horace, Private 27417, 7th The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment died 25th October 1916 aged 25. Son of Henry and Ann of Station Road, Cheddleton. Buried in Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France

PEARSON Arthur, Sergeant 9141, 2nd Cheshire Regiment died of tetanus whilst a prisoner of war in No2 Hospital, Radomier, Bulgaria on the 5th May 1918 from wounds received in action aged 28. Son of Caleb and Georgina of White Chimneys, Ipstones, Staffordshire and later son of Caleb and stepmother Jane of Park Head, Foxt near Cheddleton. Native of Rainhill, Lancashire At rest in Sofia War Cemetery, Bulgaria.

He joined the 2nd Cheshire Regiment 5th January 1909 at Macclesfield where he had his medical. He gave his age as 18yrs and 8 months and stated that he had served with the 3rd Staffordshire Battery, 2nd Midlands Brigade, Territorial Force.
8th January 1909 he was at the Cheshire Regiment Depot . 27th May 1909 with 1st Battalion and on the 8th December 1910 with the 2nd Battalion 27th November 1912 he received a Good Conduct Medal 8th January 1909-26th May 1909 at the Cheshire Regiment Depot, Chester. 27th May 1909 - 23rd September 1909 at Bordon, Hampshire. 24th September 1909 - 5th December 1910 in Belfast, Ireland
14th November 1909 - 20th November 1909 admitted to a hospital in Belfast with tonsillitis. He also received 168hrs of detention, not found what he had done.
1914-1915 with the Expeditionary Force in France. 10th May 1915 In his notes an entry was found that he had a (GSW) Gunshot wound to his head and was admitted to 10th General Hospital France 20th January 1916 embarked Devonport, disembarked at Alexandria 2nd February 1916, 23rd April 1916 embarked Alexandria and disembarked in Egypt to join his battalion on the 29th April 1916, 16th May 1916. Imperial School of Instruction. Passed 13th N.C.O. Course, Zeitoun, Egypt
19th May 1916. Promoted to corporal at Salonica. 30th July 1917. Promoted to sergeant 15th April 1918. Reported missing. 5th May 1918. Unofficially reported as having died in hospital at Radomir. Report from Officer i/c 3rd Echelon, Salonika Army. Following report of the death of No9141, Sergeant A. Pearson, Cheshire Regiment has been received in a despatch from the American Consul General at Sofia. With regret Sergeant A Pearson died in hospital at Radomir of tetanus on the 5th inst and was buried the same day in the town cemetery at that place. He was terribly wounded on the 14th April. A shell having shattered both his leg, both feet were amputated at the Field Hospital but symptoms of tetanus appearing. He was treated by injections of serum. He was removed to hospital at Radomir and at arrival at the hospital received another injection of serum but died 3 days later. Much of the above was verified by his comrades in the hospital He died of wounds 5th May whilst a Prisoner of War. Sergeant Pearson was reported by memo to the War Office (2.Casualities) on the 18th June 1918 as being a prisoner of war at No2 Hospital Radomier, Bulgaria, wounded in legs by a grenade 22nd June 1918 memo to Central Prisoners of War Committee, 4. Thurlong Place, London, SW7. It has been noted that Sgt, A.Pearson 9141, 2nd Cheshire Regiment who has been noted as a prisoner of war at No2, Hospital, Rdaomier, Bulgaria. His medals and effects were sent to his father, Caleb Pearson of Holly House, Cheddleton.

PLANT James Arthur, Private 72126, 1/5th Devonshire Regiment , died 12th September 1918. Native of Cheddleton, Staffs. He was the son of Charles and Mary Ellen nee Hulme now Blakeman and stepson to Thomas Frederick Blakeman of The Old Park, Cheddleton. At rest is buried at Ruyaulcourt Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France
