ARTHAN, Arthur, Sergeant 12847, 2nd Cameronian Scottish Rifles) Native of Burslem. He was the son of John Charles and Emma who in 1901 was residing with his parents and siblings, one being Cyril at 17, Harvey Street, Burslem, Stoke on Trent. He was killed in action 30th July 1917. Buried at Bedford House, Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
ARTHAN, Cyril, Pte 39146, 1st, South Wales Borderers. He died of wounds on the 10th September 1916. He was the son of John Charles and Emma who in 1901 was residing with his parents and siblings, one being Cyril at 17, Harvey Street, Burslem, Stoke on Trent. In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings, at 12, Gladstone Terrace, 12, Church Street, Cobridge. His occupation was given as Bottler Assistant He is buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France
BALL, James, Private 82084, Durham Light Infantry, Native of Smallthorne, Stoke on Trent. He may have been the son of James and Anne who in 1911 were living at 257, Keeling Road, Northwood, Hanley, Stoke on Trent. His name was given as Joseph James and he worked as a coupler up in a coal mine. He was killed in action 4th September 1918.Buried at Voormezeele Enclosure, No 3, West Vlaanderen, Belgium
BALL, Percy, Pte 24146, 2/6th North Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 23rd April 1917 aged 21.Native of Cobridge. He was the son of Reuben and Mary Ellen who in 1911 were living at 52, Derwent Street, Hanley and he was working aged 15 as a joiners errand boy Buried at Jeancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Aisne, France
BANBURY, J S (Incorrect surname) (BAMBURY, J on the Bennett's Memorial). Unable to find the correct record listed with the CWGC any personal information would be very much appreciated.
His correct name is Jonathan Stevenson BAMBURY born in 1898 to single woman Elizabeth BAMBURY. In 1901 Jonathan was living with his mother at his grandmother, Ellen, widowed, (her mother) home at 40 North Road, Cobridge. 1911 shows his mother has married to Frederick Harrison and he is classed as step son. now aged 20. Another search was conducted with the CGWC under the name Harrison and still he does not appear. There is a record for Private 13212, Jonathan STEVENSON, 104th Coy, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) formerly 18808, North Staffordshire Regiment, killed in action 22nd August 1916. He was born in and lived in Burslem and I believe this is one of the same person. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France
BATEMAN, Edwin, 200063 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment, formerly 1890, of the same regiment died 13th October 1915. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France

He enlisted in 1914 at Burslem and gave his occupation as a turner for Gibson Son Ltd. home address as 49, Podmore Street, Burslem and his age as 17.
On the 16th April 1915 he had his medical at Lewis Hall and certified fit for war service. On the 13th October 1915 he was reported missing and in 1916 he was struck of the strength of the battalion. His father Edwin received his personal property. whilst living at 49, Podmore Street, his mother Caroline and his siblings, eight girls, were also at this address. He appeared to be the only son. In 1911 he was an errand boy for a local grocer

He is buried at Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, Pas de Calais, France
BENNETT, Edwin Gordon, Gunner 118205, 321st Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, died 7th September 1918 aged 21. Born in Burslem and lived in Cobridge He was the son of James Gordon Bennett and Hannah Bennett, of 83, Alfred St., Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent. He is buried in Windmill British Cemetery, Monchy-Le-Preux, Pas de Calais, France
BENNETT, J (It may be this soldier) John, Private 38065, 4th North Staffordshire Regiment died 2nd December 1917. He was born in Hanly and lived in Northwood and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
Another J Bennett has been found which is another possibility. Private Joseph 25636, 9th King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry died of wounds 27th March 1918 aged 31. He was the son of Isaac Bennett, of Grahams Cottage, Poynton, Cheshire, and the late Hannah Bennett and the husband of Gertrude Bennett, of 216, Leek Road, Smallthorne, Stoke on Trent He is at rest in St. Hilaire Cemetery, Frevent, Pas de Calais, France
BENNETT, Sidney, Private 202283, North Staffordshire Regiment died 27th June 1917. Born in Burslem and lived in Cobridge and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France
He may have been the son of Mary Ann Hackney, formerly Bennett who in 1911 were living at 39 Charles Street, Cobridge, his occupation was a Potters Presser. At this address was one other child, John William Bennett aged 31 and single
BIRKS, John Henry, Sapper 45331, 80th Field Coy, Royal Engineers, died 30th May 1916. Born in Leek Staffordshire Buried at Carnoy Military Cemetery, Somme, France
He may be the son of Charles and Hannah, who in 1901 was living with his parents and siblings at 32, Hot Lane, Burslem and in 1911 residing at 61, Hot Lane. He was working in a Brickyard unloading bricks. On both census there was also a Joseph. It is possible the information found for J.H. may not be correct and he may have enlisted under the name of John.
BLACKHURST, Frederick Harvey, Cadet Officer 767582, Royal Engineers, formerly Artist Rifles, London Regiment died in the Military Hospital, Newark 30th November 1918 aged 19. He was the son of William Henry and Elizabeth of 4, Sneyd Street, Cobridge, Stoke on Trent. He is at rest in Burslem Cemetery, Stoke on Trent

He attested on the 30th September 1916 and called up on the 24th January 1918 to the 2nd Artist Rifles, Officers Training Corps (O.T.C.) at Hare Hall, Romford, Greater London. When he attested he gave his age as 17, date of birth 17th September 1899, occupation, Engineers Apprentice , living at 4, Snyed Street. His father as his next of kin and after he died a declaration had to be signed and witnessed in order to receive his son's effects. The witness was Geoffrey Hewitt of Christ Church, Cobridge. On the 20th November 1918 he was admitted to hospital with a high temperature and on the 30th November 1918 he died at 0905 with his mother at his bedside of Influenza and Pneumonia. He had two brothers Isaac and Henry, both of whom served and survived the great war.

He joined up on the 9th December 1915 as Private 20753, Royal Army Service Corps, aged 22yrs, occupation Butcher. He served in Salonica 19th March 1918 to the 5th April 1918, (no other movement sheet was found) and was demobilised at Woolwich Dockyard to Snyed Street, 23rd November 1918

He joined up at Stoke on Trent 4th October 1916 as Private 217371 43rd Supply Depot, Royal Army Service Corps, gave his occupation as Butcher and lived at 4, Sneyd Street, his father was his next of kin. 26th June 1919 he was appointed unpaid Lance Corporal and on the 18th November 1919 he left the army at Woolwich Dockyard as Corporal to his home at Sneyd Street. He died 27th January 1960

BLOOR, Joseph, Private 3054, 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment killed in action 17th November 1915 aged 22. Born at Etruria and lived in Cobridge. He was the son of Joseph of 15, Washerwall, Werrington, Stoke on Trent. He enlisted September 1914. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France
BOARDMAN, Edward. Private 15153, 7th North Staffordshire Regiment died of wounds on the 18th April 1916 at Mesopotamia. He was born at Longport and resided at Cobridge both in Stoke on Trent. He is buried at Basra War Cemetery, Iraq

He was the son of Herbert and Mary Ann who in 1901 was living with his parents and siblings, one being John H, at 5 Clair Street, Dresden. He is buried in H.A.C. BOTT, John Harold, Sergeant 4169, 11th Royal Fusiliers , killed in action 10th August 1917 aged 20. He was the son of Mrs. Mary Ann Warrender (formerly Bott), of 26, Douglas Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. previously of 5, Clair Street, Dresden and brother of Herbert Ernest who also fell. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (D.C.M.) on the 25th November 1916 when he was a private. He won it "for conspicuous gallantry in action. he led a bombing party with great courage and determination, capturing and enemy machine gun and killing the team"
BRADDOCK, Harry, Stoker 1st Class K/13669, H.M.S. Cressy died 22nd September 1914 aged 21 He was the son of William and Annie who in 1911 were residing at 121 Leek New Road, Cobridge, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. It was noted on the 1911 census that Harry was struck out with a pencil, but still visible. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire

BROOMHALL, Harold, Lance Corporal 14121, 1st North Staffordshire Regiment killed in action 10th June 1917 aged 19.
Son of Mrs. Emma Frances Frost, of The Bungalow, The Wrekin, Bagnall, Stoke-on-Trent and commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. 1901 census shows that he was the son of James and Emma Frances Baggaley . His mother remarried to a George Frost who in 1911 he and his siblings and step siblings were all living at 30, Brook Street, Hanley, Stoke on Trent He was an errand boy to the Strand Hotel, Hanley aged 13.

He joined up at Lichfield 1st September 1914 aged 18yrs and 8 months, occupation given as collier.
His mother Emma Frances Frost was his next of kin and she was living at 29, Bright Street, Hanley
On the 3rd December 1915 he was appointed Lance Corporal and on the 21st October 1916 he was on Company Orders for overstaying his leave pass (AWOL) for 7 days and 23 and half hours. He was reverted back to Private. He was admitted to hospital in the field from the 8th July 1916 to the 12th September 1916 with a gunshot wound to the right armpit. After he left the hospital he rejoined his regiment in the field.
He fought British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France from 18th July 1915 to 7th July 1916, then back to England returning to the BEF 4th September 1916 until his death 10th June 1917. His mother had some correspondence from the army but only her new address survived which was 24, Lovatt Street, Cobridge. He had two brothers Ernest aged 30 and George aged 29 and on the form that his mother had to fill in after his death she gave to location which appear to be abroad because in the box where and address should be written, she had put, " in" (not sure of the location)

CAMPBELL, A (It may be this soldier) Private 3934 Anthony Joseph, 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment, killed in action 13th October 1915 aged 21. He was the son of Alexander and Jennie of Tunstall, Stoke on Trent. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France
An Army record was found for him when he served with the 3rd Grenadier Guards. He joined up 3rd October 1912 at Lichfield as Private, later to Lance Corporal 16073 aged 18yrs and 1 month. and was stationed at Pirbright Camp, (Guards Training Depot) Surrey. He gave his father, Alexander as his next of kin and address as Station Road, Tunstall, Stoke on Trent along with mother Jennie. His occupation was a Billiard Maker. 10th July 1914 he was discharged from the army at Pirbright Camp as being no longer physically fit. He was born 13th August 1894 at Spike Island, Cork, Ireland. CAVENOR, Frank Edward (Memorial has F) Gunner 75840, 27th Battery, 32nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery killed in action 10th April 1917. Lived in Burslem and was the husband of Eliza Sherratt formerly Cavenor nee Donnally of 55, Mars Street, Smallthorne, Stoke on Trent. In 1911 he his wife and children were living at 3, Lower Street, Burslem, Stoke on Trent. He stated that he was born in Burslem, Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France
CHESTERS, Harry G, Corporal 16280, 40th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, died in England on the 30th September 1919 aged 37.He was the son of George and Jane who in 1901 were living at 32, Seaford Street, Hanley. He was the husband of Florence Emily nee Lloyd whom he married on the 18th February 1906 at St Matthew, Etruria, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. and in 1911 he was living with his wife at 31, George Street, Cobridge, Stoke on Trent, his occupation being a potters placer. He is at rest in Burslem Cemetery, Burslem, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire (His birth was registered as Harry Chesters)

He joined up at Seaforth near Liverpool on the 18th April 1901, aged 18 yrs and 5 months, occupation, Potter and was living with his parents at 32 Seaford Street, Hanley, Staffordshire. At the time of his enlistment he was serving with the Shropshire and Staffordshire Volunteer Artillery. From 1901 until his re-engagement in 1913 his record does not show if he served overseas. He was promoted Bombardier on the 3rd December 1903 and on the 28th March 1904 he extended his service to complete 7 years with the colours.
13th April 1913 he re-engaged and was mobilized the next day and posted to the 40th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
From the 15th April 1901 to 17th August 1914 he served in England (Home postings) total 13yrs
He was in France from the 18th August 1914 to 28th January 1915 when he was captured and taken to Germany the next day as a Prisoner of War until the 28th December 1918. He was transferred to Holland on the 29th December to the 7th September 1918 and repatriated to England on the 8th September 1918. On the 28th December 1918 he was discharged from the army as Corporal as being physically unfit, under Para 392, (XVI) King's Regulations He served the total of 17yrs and 258 days. (A military term which is still used) He medals were the 1914 Star, European War 1914-1918
COATES, William Wain (memorial has 'W') Private 10611, 1st North Staffordshire Regiment died of wounds 17th June 1916. Born at Burslem and resident in Cobridge, Stoke on Trent. He was the son of William Wain and Louisa nee Dallion who in 1901 were all living at 8, Milner Street, Shelton, Stoke on Trent, and husband of Elizabeth, nee Cawley who in 1907 was married at Christ Church, Cobridge. He is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery, Extension, Nord, France. In 1911 he was with his wife at 333, Sneyd Styreet, Cobridge and working at a colliery as a labourer.
His army record (3 pages) show that he joined up at Lichfield, Staffordshire on the 21st August 1914 and posted to the New Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment, Depot. He was living with his wife at 7, Abbey Street Cobridge aged 29yrs and 1 month. He saw service in the Balkans
COOPER, Arthur, Private 20213, Yorkshire and Lancaster Regiment killed in action 9th November 1917 aged 27. He was the son of Henry, who died prior to 1911 and Caroline of 11, Arthur Street, Cobridge, Stoke on Trent. His occupation in 1911 was a Potters santary presser, and he was living with his widowed mother and siblings at 27, Arthur Street, Cobridge.. He is buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.

On the 28th December 1914 he joined up at Stoke on Trent aged 23yrs and 10 months, occupation, labourer and lived at 11, Arthur Street, Cobridge.
He was posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment as Private 16136, he was then transferred, on the 27th April and joined the 1st Yorkshire and Lancaster Regiment as Private 20213 on the 12th May 1915 He was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 1st April 1915 and the to Corporal in the field on the 22nd July 1916 and on the 3rd September 1917 he reverted at his own request to private. He served in France and the Mediterranean . France from 4th May 1915 to 23rd October 1915 and the Mediterranean from the 24th October 1915 to 9th November 1917. No record was found as to what port he embarked from in England and where he disembarked in France. He Embarked from Marseilles on the 24th October 1915 and disembarked at Alexandria 6th November 1915. Embarked Alexandria 1st December 1915 and disembarked at Salonika (looks like the 4th) of December 1915. On the 10th November 1917 he was reported missing, believed killed in action.
When Arthur joined up he had a secret which he thought he got away from. On the 9th January 1915 Miss Edith Ruth Lees of 2, Mawdesley Street, Cobridge wrote to the North Staffordshire Regiment at Lichfield enquiring as to the whereabouts of Pte Arthur Cooper who is the father of her child. It appears he left for the army and did not tell her, now she is looking for maintenance arrears and support for his child. She is also sent a Magistrate Order dated 25th January 1911 ordered that three shillings a week to be paid starting on the 25th January 1911 till the child reach the age of fourteen. He was also in arrears of 1.4s.0d. He appeared to have admitted to the army that he was the father because the army had a Bastardy Order for Maintenance of his illegitimate child under Section 145 (2)b Army Act. against him. The final proceeding and order was done by a magistrate. On the 3rd March 1915 under the Order of Stoppages of Pay under section 345 of the army act placed a stoppage at the rate of four pence a day from the date of the Order for support of his child who was born 21st May 1910 Further research on the 1911 census showed the Edith who was single living with her parents, George and Rose Hannah at the same address which shows a child, Hilda born 1910. On the Staffordshire BMD the same child shows that her mothers maiden name was Leese.
COOPER, Henry, Private 21350, 1 Coy, 4th Grenadier Guards, killed in action 27th September 1915 aged 32. He was the son of Joseph and Phoebe Ann of 56, Grant Street, Cobridge, formerly of 44, Mollart Street, Hanley, Stoke on Trent, occupation brick layer. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
COPE, Thomas, Private, 8469, 1st North Staffordshire Regiment killed in action 30th April 1916. aged 36 He was the son of Thomas and Jane formerly of 79, Denbigh Street, Hanley and 53, Brown Street, Hanley. He was with his wife Elizabeth in 1911 at 31, Arthur Street, Cobridge with their young daughter. After his death his wife was residing as 38, Douglas Street, Cobridge, Stoke on Trent, information supplied to the CWGC by Elizabeth. He is buried in Dranoutre Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

He joined 5th June 1899 aged 24yrs and 6 months as Private 4494, North Staffordshire Regiment Militia, occupation, Labourer. He gave his wife as his next of kin and she was living at 33, Victoria Street, Burslem. On the 9th March 1900 he embarked for South Africa and left South Africa, and on the 10th June 1902 he arrived back in England where he was demobilized the following day. He re-engaged for a further period of 4yrs from the 22nd September 1908 at Lichfield, Staffordshire and gave his wife as his next of kin who was now living at 27, Arthur Street, Cobridge. Each year he had to do his annual training with the 4th North Stafford Militia as part of his engagement with the Militia. On the 21st September 1912 his period of engagement terminated to the army reserve after serving four years, He was awarded the Queen and Kings South African Medal with Clasp.
COPESTAKE, E (Surname is COPESTICK) There are two from Stoke on Trent.
It could be this soldier. Private Edward COPESTICJ, 13668, (New Battalion) 8th North Staffordshire Regiment was killed in action between 3rd and 6th July 1916, aged 24 on the Somme, France. He was the son of William and Jane nee Williams who in 1911 were living at 80, Etruria Road, Hanley, Stoke on Trent. His widowed mother gave another address to the army as being 24, Brook Street, Boothen Lane, Hanley. He was the husband of Anne Aldridge formerly Copstick nee Tomkinson of 28 James Street, Brookhouse Green, Bucknall, Stoke on Trent who he married on the16th June 1912 at Holy Trinity Church, Northwood, Stoke on Trent, they had one child a daughter. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme France.

He joined up at Lichfield, Staffordshire on the 7th September 1914 .He was posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment Depot on the 30th September 1914 and on the 7th October 1914 he joined his regiment, the 8th Battalion. He gave his wife as his next of kin and she living at 15, Gill Street, Shelton, Stoke on Trent. October 1916 his wife was living at 25, Lonsdale Road, Bootham Lane, Hanley. September 1919 she was living at 28, James Street, Brookhouse Green, Bucknall, Stoke on Trent and on the 14th January 1920 as Mrs Anne Aldridge was living at 3 Ubberley Road, Bucknall, the address that her late husband's Memorial Scroll was sent. At enlistment he gave his occupation as miner.

He was the son of Ernest and Frances who in 1911 were living at 2, Lower Crackley, Chesterton, Staffordshire. He was born in Burslem, Stoke on Trent and is buried at Ypres reservoir Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
DAVENPORT, A It may be this soldier. Private 37072, Alfred Ernest Davenport, 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly 25531, North Staffordshire Regiment, killed in action 12th October 1916 and was the son of John and Mary nee Lakin who in 1901 were living at 93, King William Street, Tunstall, Stoke on Trent employed as a Potters gilder. In 1911 he was living with his wife Alice May nee Slater at his mother in law's home at 75, Hall Street, Burslem employed as a Packers clerk. . He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

In 1915 he joined up with the 3/5th North Staffordshire Regiment and was posted to the 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment on the 24th October 1915 as Private 4430, his occupation was a collier aged 22 years. and gave his address as 14, Lovatt Street, North Road, Cobridge. He embarked Southampton 27th October 1915 and disembarked at Rouen, France the next day. He joined his regiment and was put into B. Coy on the 12th November 1915.

His next of kin was his wife, Emily, nee Hiscox who he married on the 11th June 1899 at St Matthew, Etruria, Stoke on Trent. They were living at 23, Garden Row, Cobridge with their six children. He was promoted to Sergeant on the 6th July 1916 and was killed in action between 18/19th November 1916 whilst serving with the 2/5th North Staffords
ELLIS, R J ( Mystery man) No birth record was found in the Stoke on Trent. I have found this record for a R T Ellis which may be him. Private 466769, Richard Thomas Ellis, 29th Canadian Infantry who was killed in action 16th September 1916 aged 32. He was the son of Richard and Emma who in 1901 were living at 86, Boundary Street, Hanley. In 1911 he was living with his widowed mother at 7, Chester Street, Hanley and he was working as a railway shunter. He left for Quebec, Canada alone, from Liverpool on passenger ship Corsican on the 20th April 1911. It appears that he was married to Mable in Canada and was known as Thomas
EVANSON, Alfred, Private 304342, Motor Transport, Army Service Corps, died 7th November 1918 aged 21. He was the son of Alfred and Annie Elizabeth of 59, Louis Street, Burslem, formerly in 1901, of 338 Cobridge Road, Hanley. He is buried in Burslem Cemetery, Stoke on Trent.

He joined up at Grove Park, Army Service Corps Depot on the 10th April 1917 aged 19yrs and 6 months. He gave his address as 4, Chapel Street, Wem,
Salop and occupation as a Motor Mechanic. He had formerly served with the 2/5th North Staffordshire regiment as Private 3546 and was discharged from the regiment on the16th September 1915. On the 3rd May 1917 he embarked for France and left France on the 22nd May 1917 for Salonika, arriving on the 23rd May 1917. He left Salonika for England on the 22nd November 1917 arriving the next day the 23rd. He was discharged from the army on the 2nd February 1918 after serving 1 year and 224 days.
An internal memo from the Officer Commanding, 38th Motor Ambulance Convoy, Salonika to Lieutenant L. Clark , in charge A.S.C. Record Section, 3. Echelon, G.H.Q., British Salonica Force, 16th August 1917, informing that Number M/304342, Private, Evanson, A. was admitted to hospital on the 21st July 1917 suffering from Pulmonary Tubercoulosis. The main body of the memo was enquiring if he was exposed to harsh weather conditions, whether he was under canvas" if so, how long for."This is important" and did he have proper clothing, i.e., clean underclothing and lastly, did he suffer from any health problems.
The reply stamped 19th August 1917, Stated, that he was not exposed to harsh weather conditions. He was under canvas for seven weeks and three days, from May 30th to 21st July 1917 in Salonica. Yes, he did have proper clothing and he had been subject to health problems since he joined the unit, but, not necessitating admission to hospital prior to 21st July 1917.

FORRESTER, F (There in no "F" Forrester listed with the CWGC only 9 "F" and varients, ie F.M.) Further research found listed with the ( SDGC ) Soldiers the Died in the Great War web site Private 24842, Frederick FORSTER, 8th Royal Welsh Fusiliers who was killed in action in Mesopotamia 9th April 1916 and who was born in Tunstall. The (CGWG) Commonwealth War Graves Commission have him listed as FOSTER. He was the son of Thomas and Hannah and husband of Margaret, of Sneyd Street, Tunstall, Stoke on Trent. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. His birth was registered as Frederick Forster, at Wolstanton 1879. The Sentinel dated Tuesday, November 9th 2010 have him as Foster.

He was reported missing in the field, assumed to have died on the 9th April 1916 in Basra after being in the country from the 28th February 1916.

He enlisted as Robert FORSTER on the 31st August 1914 aged 32, worked as a collier and was living with his wife, Mary Ann, nee Eyres ( who he married in 1903 at Sneyd Church, Burslem), who was his next of kin at 6. Moor Street, Cobridge. He had previously served with the 4th North Staffordshire Regiment for 12 years have served in the last Boer War. He was promoted to Acting Sergeant with the 11th Battalion on the 10th February 1915 and posted to the 7th Battalion as Sergeant on the 14th February 1915 and he was killed in action at Mesopotamia as Sergeant, on the 20th April 1916. Also with his record is a newspaper page from a local News paper dated Saturday May 27, 1916 listed the men from Staffordshire who were killed in action of injured. and the insertion for robert is " Sgt R Forster, Cobridge. Mrs M.A. Forster of 6, Moor Street, Cobridge has received official information that her husband Sgt R Forster was killed in action on April 23rd. Prior to joining the Army he was employed at Sneyd Colliery. he served in the Boer War"

He enlisted at Burslem 21st September 1914 and lived at 28, Blackswell Row, Cobridge, and gave his occupation as a miner. At the time of his enlistment his parents were living at 43, Buxton Street, Sneyd Green, Hanley. He had five brothers, two, served in the army, Samuel and George, details to follow. He embarked Southampton on the 4th March 1915 and disembarked Le Havre, France the next morning. He was killed in action in the field on the 13th October 1915 with the 5th Battalion.
Samuel served as Private 277307, Labour Corps and lived at 276, Cobridge Road, Hanley, same address as stated on a form in Paul's army record. He worked as a crate maker for Davies Bros, Cobridge. His next of kin was his wife Ellen Hawkins, nee Kear who he married at Christ Church, Cobridge on the 27th March 1910. He attested on the 8th December 1915 and put into the Army reserve. He was mobilized on the 13th June 1917 to the North Staffordshire Depot and then transferred to the Labour Corps on the 31st June 1917. He served in France form 13th June 1917 to 6th March 1918. On the 7th March he was discharged from the army as being no longer fit for war service.
Edward, according to Paul's Army record was living at 56, Trafalgar Street, Hanley. . He enlisted into the army as George Edward of 25, Buxton Street aged 25yrs and 11 months.
The following may be for his brother George on enlistment was living at 25, Buxton Street, same street as parents Paul and Eliza. On a document in Paul's army record he was living at 56, Trafalgar Street, Hanley. On the 20th September 1915 he enlisted as George Edward Glover and was posted as Private 121633, Motor Transport (MT) Army Service Corps at Grove Park, London SE. and gave his occupation as Turner, His wife, Annie, nee Edge who he married on the 5th December 1909 at Trinity Church, Hanley was his next of kin. On an army form Transfer of Kit. he was at Ostlery Park, London M.T. Depot, Kit Section where he was getting new kit for the purpose of soldering with his brother (no name) and to proceed with him to East Africa.
On the 20th November 1917 he had an accident where an exhaust fell onto his toes, fracturing some. he was admitted to hospital the same day. There were two witnesses, on a Private Beresford and the other H Glover. he had a brother called Harry, no army record could be found for him. He was employed as a Caterpillar driver and fitter. He served in France with 654 Coy, A.S.C. attached to 77th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, from 26th March 1916 to 29th November 1917. He was discharged fro the army to Z Class (Reserve) 12th February 1919 at Woolwich Dockyard to 25. Buxton Street, Hanley

In 1911 he was in the Burslem Union Work House, Turnhurst Road, Tunstall and gave his occupation as a Store keeper. There was other family of his in this workhouse. His effects from his Will was left to his sister, Florence. He is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.

HODGKINSON, Robert, Private, 4984, 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment died of wounds 14th July 1916 aged 36. He is buried in Etretat Churchyard, Seine-Maritime, France. Some notes from what is left of his Army record. On the 26th April 1914. he joined the army from his home, where he lived with his parents, John and Elizabeth of 150, Leek New Road, Cobridge, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. He stated that he had served for six years with the 4 Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment and was posted to the 3/5th North Staffordshire Regiment at the Depot. Before he left England he was served with Army Form B.282 Orders for Stoppages of Pay under Section 145 of the Army act, brought on my a claim by Miss Alice Maud Cole of 19a Pitt Street, Burslem. He was placed under stoppage of pay at the rate of four pence per day from the date (1st June 1915 at York) of this order for support his illegitimate children (three children, not named) but their dates of birth were 20th October 1911, 20th June 1913 and 28th March 1914. On the 2nd January 1916 he embarked Southampton for France and the next day 3rd, disembarked at Rouen. He was sent to the North Midland Divisional Base on the 7th January 1916 where on the 3rd March 1916 he joined C Company 3/5th Battalion and later transferred into the 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment on the 25th December 1916. On the 24th June 1916 he received a wound to his left leg and was admitted to 20th Casuality Clearing Station, and later admitted to 1st general Hospital, Etretat on the 29th June 1916 and died of his wounds in the same hospital on the 14th July 1916 aged 36.
Another Army Record was found for him but only two part pages. One showed when he died and the other gave another home address as, Hill Top, Brown Edge, Staffordshire.

He was the son of Thomas and Jane Starkey, of Longton, Stoke-on-Trent and husband of Ellen Starkey, formerly Bentley nee Degg , of 19, Lovatt Street, Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent.
His army record shows that he enlisted 28th May 1915, occupation Coachman, and was residing with his wife at 19, Lovatt Street. A brief entry was found stating that his body was exhumed (location not given) and was reburied at Birr Cross
He is buried at Birr Cross Roads Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium

30th June 1915 he rejoined his unit

15th July 1915, tried by District Court Martial. Sentenced to 1 year in prison from when on
active service deserting His Majesty's Service.
8th December 1915 he was released and posted with the 1st North Staffordshire Regiment to France
1st May 1916 he was gassed but survived
31st August 1916 killed in action in the field.
TUNSTALL, F (It may be this person) Private 28305 Enoch TUNSTALL, 19th Royal Welsh Fusiliers died of wounds on the 24th April 1917. He is at rest in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, Somme, France. What remains of his army record shaws that he enlisted on the 15th February 1915 aged 28, and a miner. He was living with his parents Enoch Tomkinson and Emily at 31, Grant Street, Burslem and he was his next of kin. That changed when Enoch married Mary Ann Kirkham on the 3rd June 1915 at Christ Church, Cobridge and he then lived with his wife at 17, Grant Street. They had one issue, Enoch Ernest born on the 6th February 1917 and on the 24th April 1917 his father died of wounds in 48th Casualty Clearing Station.

WHITEHEAD, John Augustus, Corporal 22165, 15th Durham Light Infantry, killed in action, 3rd May 1917 aged 20. Born in Birmingham and lived in Cobridge and was the son of William and Annie of Prospect House, Cobridge Road, Hanley. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. What remains of his army record shows that he joined up at Newcastle-under-Lyme on the 16th November 1914 aged 19 and he was then living at 340 Waterloo Road, Cobridge. In France on the 31st December 1915 he was shot in the back and left arm which appear to have been a 'minor' wound. He was treated in the field at on the 19th January he returned to active service. On the 3rd July 1917 he was reported missing in action and later presumed killed. His mother Ann was now living at 348, Cobridge Road, Cobridge.
WILLIAMSON, Thomas William, born 1895 and birth registered at Trentham. 1911 census shows him with his parents William and Emily at 94 Cromartie Street, Florence, Longton, Stoke on Trent. He is now an apprentice mould maker. (I have bee unable to locate the correct record for this person listed with the CWGC)
