Charles De Gaulle French Aircraft Carrier

1994 CHARLES DE GAULLE. Frances first nuclear powered aircraft carrier was much delayed for political and economic reasons.
Extended Description
NUCLEAR POWER

Charles de Gaulle was laid down in April 1989 at the Brest Naval Dock yard, the size of that building dock limiting the ships dimensions. She was launched on 14 May 1994 and is scheduled to enter service before the end of the millennium. Her most significant feature is her nuclear propulsion system, based on that of the Le Triomphant class of submarines. However, her small size ruled out a third nuclear reactor and associated turbine.

OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE SYSTEMS

Charles de Gaulles air group is to comprise a navalised version of the Rafale strike fighter, the Super-Etendard bomber and Grumman Hawkeye airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft, together with helicopters. Her onboard armament includes four octuple banks of vertically launched Aster 15 anti-missile missiles, two sextuple launchers for SADRAL surface-to-air missiles and eight 20mm cannon. Charles de Gaulle also mounts DRBV 26 long-range air surveillance, DRBV 15 target designation and DBRJ 11 air search/tracking radars.
