The pilot is one of the US Air Force Thunderbirds precision flying team ejecting from his aircraft. Don't know the circumstances of the ejection.

Okay. I just figured the smoke and fire in the picture was the ejection seat cartridges detonating and the seat rocket going off.

Agreed, the flame under the pilot is his ejection seat. But, to the rear of his jet is far too much smoke and heat signature to be normal.

A friend of mine was at this event at Mountain Home AFB. He turned away right when this happened and did not see it it with his own eyes. He had been an airman at Mtn Home years before, and spent many days outside at that airfield. Enough time that he was pretty ho-hum about seeing anything bad or out of norm actually happening. And then, it did.
