Brocklehurst, Samuel Needham

Commemorated on a family memorial in Burslem cemetery, Burslem, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire

Sergeant, 203990,Samuel Needham Brocklehurst, 8th North Staffordshire Regiment. Son of Frederick and Mary Ann of Sneyd Green, Milton, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire (his father died 9th May 1908, at Birches Head Farm, Hanley, Stoke on Trent) husband of Florence Louise, nee Jones, of Sneyd Green, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire killed in action 12th April 1918. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

The first one that was found relates to when he was serving with the Imperial Yeomanry ( Staffordshire Yeomanry)
Private 1384, and he enlisted on the 28th May 1902, aged given as 22 and was living at 7, Buxton Street, Sneyd Green, Hanley, Staffordshire
He was working with his father, Frederick, Farm owner at Sneyd Green. At question 6, on this sheet . "Do you own a horse or can you obtain one for annual training" , reply, "Yes own horse"

In this file was another set of documents relating to the Staffs Yeomanry and some for him being in the Great war,
He enlisted in April 1908 and gave his father as his employer and same address, 7, Buxton Street, aged 28yrs and 4 months and born in Leek, Staffordshire. He was with his wife, Florence at the same address.
On the 7th April 1908 he was private 1384, later on (no date given) he was promoted to Lance Corporal, with the Staffordshire Yeomanry.
and on the 27th February he was promoted to Corporal
He was promoted to sergeant with the Staffordshire Yeomanry on the 3rd December 1914 and was discharged under 392 (XXI) Kings Regulations, is time had expired (End of his engagement)
It was noted that he had to re-engage for 1 year all the time he was with the Yeomanry

2nd set of documents (no date as to when he re-engaged) but he did have a medical 14th March 1917
Address, 7, Buxton Street, Hanley, occupation farmer age 36 years. Previously served as 1384, Staffordshire Yeomanry from 1902 to 14th April 1916. Now Sgt 203990, formerly 4448 with the North Staffordshire Regiment.
He married Florence Louise nee Jones at a chapel in Hanley, (the name I could not make out) on the 20th October 1902, and six children were mentioned
He was killed in action in the field 12th April 1918 (no other details were found as to the cause of his death)
His widow was allowed a pension for herself and six children at 44/7 (44 shillings and 7 pence) from the 11th November 1918
