You can equate it with shooting a 12 gauge 3" magnum shotgun, hefty but not unpleasant, thanks to the muzzleblast deflector and short recoil system. However, you don't want to stand to the side when the weapon is fired due to the effects the muzzlebrake produces. That part is quite unpleasant.

A friend sent me an email recently which demonstrated the power of this weapon.
A backwoods hunter from the Alabama NG spotted a guy, complete with suicide bomber vest, inside a compound in the Green Zone in Iraq. He used a well-placed .50cal sniper round to eliminate the threat and the result could be seen in a pic accompanying the email. It is far too graphic for here, but if anyone is GENUINELY INTERESTED in seeing it and not just a ghoul, pm me your email.

Saw the latest Barett Sniper Rifle on Future Weapons and they have almost negated the recoil on this puppy. Excellent peice of kit. Cheers, Bob sal;
