AYRES Albert Ernest C Sgt 9128, 7th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action at Mesopotamia on the 25th February 1917. Stepson of Charles Robbin who was granted a war gratuity on the 5th February 1918, revised on the 15th October 1919. His mother was called Elizabeth Isabell, nee, Ornsby. His father was called James. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
AYRES Hubert Charles Corporal 20482, 10th South Wales Borderers died of wounds on the 9th June 1918 aged 25. He was the son of John and Lucy of 1901, Church Street, Avening. In 1911 he was living with his father, widower and his siblings at Bell Corner, Avening. , Born at Evening, enlisted at Cwm, Monmouthshire. He died with the rank of sergeant at Cardiff War Hospital, and lived at Bell Corner, Avening He was laid to rest in Holy Cross Churchyard, Avening, Gloucestershire.
AYRES Richard. Private 3724, 5th Gloucestershire Regiment . He was killed on a railway at Winchester while on military guard duty on the 30th July 1915 aged 51. Laid to rest on the 5th August 1915, His widow Mary Ann, (nee Jones) was granted a war gratuity on the 27th January 1916. In 1901 he was living with his wife and children at The Hill, Avening, Gloucestershire. 1911 they are now living at Star Lane, Avening, occupation, tree feller. His parents were called William and Martha and he was born at Frampton Mansell, Gloucestershire. On the 17th October 1919 their daughter, Mrs Amelia Maud Cuff was granted a war gratuity. BLACKWELL George John Rowland 2nd Lt, 2/6th Manchester Regiment, formerly 153956, Royal Field Artillery killed in action 30th March 1918 aged 21. He was born in 1897 at Barton End, Nailsworth to John Howard and Mary Ann, nee Rowland. In 1901 he was living with grandmother Mary Ann at Church Farm, Avening. In 1911 he was living with uncle and aunt, Frederick William and Bessie Rowland at Church Farm, Avening. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at Court Farm, Barton End, Nailsworth, Gloucestershire. His effects went to John Howard Blackwell, farmer. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France. Commemorated on the Poziers Memorial France
BRIDGEMAN John Herbert Pte 1997, 1st Gloucestershire Regt, killed in action on Sunday 9/5/1915. Son of Henry and Laura of Minichinhampton, In 1911 he was living at Nags Head, Avening, occupation, stable lad. Commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
CHIPP Albert Henry. Private 4090, 28th Australian Infantry killed in action 10th June 1918 aged 28. Son of William Henry and Elizabeth In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings at West End, Avening, Gloucestershire, occupation, painter. On the 2nd August 1912 he embarked from London on ship Orsova, bound for Fremantle aged 21 occupation, painter.
Some notes from his army records
He joined up on the 5th January 1916 in Perth, Australia aged 25 and 8 months, occupation, painter. He had previously served as an apprentice for 5 years as an engineer A E Drysdale, at Nailsworth. He embarked from Fremantle on the 1st April 1916 on HMAT A38, Ulysses bound for Alexandria. On the 29th May 1916 he embarked from Alexandra on HMT Tunisian for France. Disembarking at Mudros on the 15th June 1916. He joined his unit at Etaples on the 4th August 1916 and was killed in action on the 10th June 1918. His records show that he was buried at Rancourt and Sailly, France. It appears that his body was not found after the war. Commemorated on his parents memorial in Holy Cross Churchyard, Avening, Gloucestershire and also on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France. Note. CLAPTON Augustus Pte CH/2314(S) 1st Royal Marine Light Infantry 63rd Royal Navy Division died of disease as a P.O.W., in hospital, 15 July 1918 aged 29. Born on the 20th March 1889 at Avening to Sydney and Harriett of Barn Row, Avening. Commemorated on his parents memorial in the Holy Cross churchyard, Avening, Gloucestershire. COOKE Edward Ernest Pte 22973, 10th Gloucestershire Regt, killed in action on Sunday 23/7/1916. Son of Mrs. Louisa Cooke, nee Payne. His father Daniel Albert was granted a war gratuity on the 21st March 1917 revised on the 15th September 1919. CUFF Albert Harry. Private 7683, 7th Gloucestershire Regiment died 29th August 1916 at Mesopotamia. He was born in 1881 to Charles and Susannah Workman, Nee Phelps He was baptised on the 7th August 1887 at Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire and his parents were living at Tetbury Street, Minchinhampton. In 1911 he was now married and living with his wife Amelia Maud and their son, Harry, aged 1 month at Star Lane, Avening, Gloucestershire. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

nr Bethune, 8 /12/ 1915 age 19 Son of Frederick William and Annie Elizabeth Dee, of The Cross, Avening, Glos. DICKERSON George Sergeant 12620 Royal Engineers attached to 15th Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery died 27/10/1918 aged 27 Son of Jonathan and Mary Ann Dickerson, of Woodbridge, Suffolk and husband of Emily Esther nee Rowels. They were married on the 6th September 1913 at Brimscombe church, Gloucestershire . He was born at Henley Suffolk in 1888 to Jonathan and Mary Ann. In 1901 he was living with his parents at Sutton Road, Bromswell, 1911 he was a boarder at The Institute Avening. He left a wife and daughter, Emily Enid Sybil born at Avening on the 12th September 1917. Buried at Giavera British Cemetery, Arcade, Italy
Some notes from what remains of his army records. He joined up aged 18 and 2 months on the 8th March 1904. Living with his parents at Woodbridge Suffolk, occupation, assistant butcher. He served in South Africa from the 24th December 1904 to 4th March 1907, returned to home posting on the 5th March 1907. He was mobilized on the 5th August 1914 and posted to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 18th August 1915, left France for home posting on the 18th September 1914 due to being wounded. No records found relating to him being wounded. He remained in England until 20th January 1917 thereafter he was posted back to France where he died of broncho pneumonia on the 27th October 1918 at 39 Casualty Clearing Station, Italy .

FLETCHER Charles William Private 13413, 10th Service Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action 25th September 1915 aged 30. Son of John and Ellen Fletcher, of Nailsworth, husband of Alice Fletcher, of Tetbury Hill, Avening, near Stroud, Gloucestershire. His widow, Alice Maud, nee Seaborn was granted a war gratuity on the 19th June 1916, revised on the 25th August 1919. He was married at King's Stanley, Gloucestershire on the 21st July 1912. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.
FLETCHER Frederick James Pte 13303, 1st Grenadier Guards, died 29 October 1914 age 26. Born at Tetbury, enlisted at Stroud, both in Gloucestershire. Son of John James and Ellen of Nags Head, Avening, Gloucestershire. His father was granted a war gratuity on the 7th March 1916, revised 31st July 1919. FORD Joshua Albert Pte 100353 Labour Corps formerly 2884, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, and 54732 15 Section Labour Coy Devonshire Regiment, killed in action 1st August 1917. Born and raised in Avening, Gloucestershire to William and Olive at Nags Head, Evening, Gloucestershire. Husband of Minnie Beatrice Louisa Gubbins who he married on the 31st May 1904 at France Lynch, Gloucestershire. There children were called Rosella Doris born 9th February 1914 at Thornbury Glos, Albert William born 22nd September 1905 at Chalford near Stroud, Glos and Olive Elsie Annie 15th November 1909 at Dursley, Glos At rest in The Huts Cemetery, Belgium
Some notes from what remains of his army records. He joined up at Gosport aged 19 and 2 months on the 28 March 1900 and sent to the King's Royal Rifle Corps Depot. On the19th July 1900 posted to the 4th Battalion, then to the 13th on the 26th March 1903. He re-engaged with the KRRC on the 2nd October 1911. Then left the army on the expiration of his engagement with the colours on the 26th May 1912 and posted to the army reserve. During his time in the army he was posted to Cork on the 18th July 1900, Roslin Castle 11th December 1901 and fought in the Boer War from 4th January 1902. He was mobilized 5th August 1914 to report at Winchester with KRRC. On the 25th March 1917 he period of engagement with the KRRC had expired. He was transferred as private 54732 15 Section, 168 Labour Corps Devonshire Regiment serving in France. He was again transferred with 168 Labour Coy into the Labour Corps with number 100353. His wife had moved from France Lynch near Stroud to Priors Wood, Halmore near Berkeley Gloucestershire.

FREEMAN William. Private 23452, 7th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action at Mesopotamia on the 29th March 1918 aged 27. Son of William Freeman and Sarah A, of Sapperton, Gloucestershire. In 1911 his parents were living at Williamstrip Farm, Coln St Aldwyns, Gloucestershire. He in 1911 was a boarder aged 20 at the home of James and Emily Russell of 29 Hathrop, Gloucestershire, occupation, waggoner. Commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
HICKS George William . Lance Corporal 6569, Gloucestershire Regiment. Born in 1883 to Ernest and Lizzie, nee Dee, of Star Lane, Avening. In 1901 he was living at Culver House Stables, Minchinhampton. 1911 living with his parents at Star Lane. He married Eliza Jane Owen on the 21st March 1914 at Tetbury Registry Office, Gloucestershire. Died on the 5th March 1920 age 37 in the Registration District of St George, Hanover Square, London. Burial location not known.

He joined the Gloucestershire Regiment on the 16th September 1902 at Horfield (Glosters) Depot, Bristol aged 19 and 7 months, occupation, groom He was later posted on the 30th December 1902 to the 5th Battalion, then the 2nd Battalion of the 6th January 1903 and finally the 1st Battalion of the 25th March 1904. On the 15th September 1905 he was transferred to the Army Reserved on the termination of his first period of engagement with the colours. He was called to the colours on the 5th August 1914 and posted to the Glosters Depot at Horfield Barracks, Bristol. On the 3rd June 1915 His next of kin was his stepfather Edwin Newman and his mother, Elizabeth of Star Lane. he was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was wounded at St Lazare, France, shrapnel wound to his right knee and back between the 14th and 15th September 1914. He was invalided to England on S.S. Caronia on the 21st September 1914. from 3rd General Hospital, Le Havre, France. He was discharged fit for duty and on the 4th December 1914 he was sent back to the front. He fell ill while at the front suffering from tonsillitis and was admitted and treat at No 4 Casualty Clearing Station, Lillers, on the 21st January 1915. He was invalided to England now with the diagnosis of Pleurisy on Hospital Ship, St Patrick

He was discharge aged 35 with the rank of Lance Corporal on the termination of his first period of service with the colours on the 15th September 1915 to his home at Star Lane, Avening. On the 20th
December 1918 he under went on a Nation Service Medical Board at Shirehall, Gloucestershire where it was found that he was suffering from permanent Pulmonary Phthisis (lung disease) with no cure.
HILL George M M Not listed with the CWGC , however it may be this person. HILL George . D.C.M. Private 202091 2nd Seaforth Highlanders died of wounds 3/5/1918 aged 33. Native of Avening Gloucestershire enlisted at Cricklewood Middlesex Son of George Richard and Frances Emily Anne Hill, husband of E G Hill of 11, Mora Road , Cricklewood, London. His widow was granted a war gratuity on the 11th July 1918, revised on the 16th November 1918 and again on the 2nd December 1919. Husband of Ethel J Hill, nee Collier of 11, Mora Road., Cricklewood, London. Buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, France

Private 202091 H G HILL (Cricklewood) For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As Lewis gunner he fought his gun in an exposed position. He poured drum after drum into the enemy, who overwhelmed his team. After lying wounded, he escaped from the enemy in the dark. At rest in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
HILL Percy Lynn. D.C.M. Sergeant 35069 6th Siege Batter, Royal Garrison Artillery killed in action 8th October 1918. Son of William Griffin and Mary Ann nee Lynn of Tetbury Hill, Avening He was married on the 17th November 1917 at Holy Cross Church, Avening to Esther May. He was aged 25, sergeant in the army, and was stationed at Winchester son of William Griffin Hill, deceased. Esther was aged 23 from Avening, daughter of Alfred May. At rest in Templeux-Le-Guerard Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

35069 Sergeant P L Hill, R.G.A. (Avening) London Gazette September 1918) For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When an enemy shell burst under his gun and destroyed half his detachment, the N.C.O., although knocked of his feet and badly shaken, collected the rest of the men and continued firing the gun. It was entirely owing to his example under this heavy fire that the section remained steady.

IND Walter Gunner 95270, Royal Garrison Artillery . Joined up on the 23rd November 1915 at Horfield Barracks, Bristol aged 22 and 5 months. Born at Avening, Gloucestershire, occupation, groom, cowman. He lived at Queen Ann Cottage, Doynton, Gloucestershire. Enlisted at Horfield Barracks, Bristol on the 22nd November 1915 aged 22 and 5 months. Born in 1893 at Avening to Paul and Elizabeth. In 1901 he was living with his parents at New Inn Lane, Avening, Gloucestershire, 1911 living with his parents at Bell Corner, Avening. Died on the 9th April 1920 of acute pulmonary tuberculosis and cardiac failure at Cranham Sanatorium, near Stroud, Gloucestershire aged 26. Laid to rest in Avening Churchyard 15th April 1920.

NEWMAN Harold Henry Private 29022, 1/5th Territorial Force, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, formerly 44743, Devonshire Regiment killed in action 19th August 1918. Born at Avening, enlisted at Bristol, possible Horfield Barracks. Son of Thomas William and Mary Rebecca nee Mead of (1901) Bubblewell, Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire. On the 17th June 1908 at the Holy Cross Church, Avening he married Daisy Loiusa nee Vincent. He was aged 21, cloth worker and living at Minchinhampton, she was aged 24, cloth worker, living in Avening, daughter of William. In 1911 he was now living with his wife and two children at Tetbury Hill, Avening, still working as a cloth worker. His wife remarried and was called Medcroft. He is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
NURDING Charles Private PLY/1729(S) 1st Royal Marine Light Infantry, Royal Naval Division Born on the 6th December 1893, enlisted on the 13th November 1916 and died on the 25th August 1918. Son of Charles and Elizabeth of High Street, Avening. Husband of Sarah Marley Wood, Nailsworth, Gloucestershire. His brother Samuel John fought in the war as Private 24751, Gloucestershire Regiment and survived. He did suffer from shell shock on the 11th August 1917. Discharged on the 6th January 1919. PAYNE Charles Barnett Private G/21753, 1st Royal West Kent Regiment, formerly 203575 Gloucestershire Regiment and 3725, Gloucestershire Yeomanry. Killed in action 19th October 1918. Born at Nailsworth, lived in Minchinhampton, enlisted at Stroud, all Gloucestershire. Born 1888 Avening, son of John Payne and Cecilia nee Underwood. In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents at Iron Mills, Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire, occupation, (1911) Clerk at a local cloth mill. He was married on the 22nd May 1915 at Shortwood Chapel, Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, to Cissie Edith Watts. Both were living at Hernlea, Avening, They had a daughter, Mary, born on the 16th February 1917. At rest in St. Souplet British Cemetery, France.
Some notes from his army records. He attested into the army on the 27th November 1915 into the 3/1st Gloucestershire Hussars Yeomanry as private 3725 and posted to the Army Reserve aged 21 and 61 days, occupation, clerk. He was mobilised on the 29th May 1916 and posted to Horfield Barracks (Depot) Bristol. After he had completed his training he embarked from Southampton for France on the 16th December 1916, disembarked at Rouen the following day and marched into Base Depot, Rouen. On the 31st December 1916 he was sent to join the 2/6th Gloucestershire Regiment as private 203375. While at the front he fell ill with trench feet on the 4th April 1917. He was treated at 2/3rd Field Ambulance, on the 6th April at 107 Field Ambulance, the at O General Hospital, Rouen on the 8th April. He was invalided to England on 2nd May 1917 and admitted into 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth. He was discharged to sick leave fit for war service. On the 25th July 1918 he was posted back to France, embarking from Folkestone and disembarking the same day at Boulogne and marched into Infantry Base Depot. On the 28th July 1918 sent to 2/5th Gloucestershire Regiment and on the 31st July 1918 posted to the 12th Battalion. He was transferred as Private 21753 into the 1st Royal West Kent Regiment on the 6th October 1918 and was killed in action on the 19th October 1918. His wife at one stage left Gloucestershire and was living at 7 Falmouth Avenue, Otley Road, Bradford, Yorkshire. She the returned to Gloucestershire and was living about 1918 at Longfords Valley, Minchinhampton.
POLLOCK Frederick Lt, 1st Coldstream Guards, killed in action 22/10/1914 age 29 at Langemarck, Belgium. . Born on the 24th October 1885 at 74 Queens Gate, London, elder son of Robert Erskine Pollock and Mary Viner Pollock, nee Playne. of Avening Court, Avening , brother of Martin who also fell. Buried at St Julien Dressing Station Cemetery, Belgium
POLLOCK Martin Viner Lt, 3rd, attached to the 1st South Wales Borderers killed in action 9th May 1915 at Richebourg St Vaast, France. Son of Robert Erskine and Mary Viner. In 1911 he was living with father, now a widower, at 74 Queens Gate, South Kensington, London. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at Avening Court, Avening, Gloucestershire. Son of William and Kate of Westonbirt Cottages, Westonbirt, Gloucestershire, later of Longmans, Avening, Gloucestershire. In 1911 he was now in the army aged 18 at the Guards Depot, Caterham, Surrey. At rest in Guards Cemetery Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France.
ROBINS Jesse William Pte 24207, 7th Gloucestershire Regt, killed in action at Mesopotamia on the 22nd April 1916. Son of Charles who was granted a war gratuity on the 14th September 1916. On the 20th September 1919 Hannah Janice was granted a war gratuity. Charles was not mentioned. In 1901, aged 8 years, he was living with his parents Charles and Elizabeth at Old Hill, Avening, Gloucestershire. In 1911 he was living with his uncle, William and aunt, Harriett Tenner at Fennell Cottage, Lypiatt, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, occupation, farm worker. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
SHARP Adolphus William Cluterbuck Born on the 17th July 1860 at Avening, Gloucestershire as Adolphus William Clatterbuch Sharpe to Rosa and Cordelia Sharp of Avening. Baptised at the Holy Cross Church, Avening, Gloucestershire on the 20th July 1862. In 1881 he was boarding at 4 Bristol Road, Gloucester City, occupation, engine fitter, turner. 1891, living with his wife at 42 Clive Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, occupation, Engine Room Artificer. In 1901 he was living with his wife at 130 Telephone Road, Portsmouth, He was serving in the Royal Navy as Artificer Engineer, aged 40 Served in the Royal Navy as 122409. Enlisted on the 1st February 1883 on HMS Asia, his last ship on the 31st March 1898 was HMS Victory II with the rank of Artificer Engineer He had served on many other ships in between. Adolphus William Sharp of Avening Gloucestershire joined the Royal Navy 1st February 1883 civilian occupation, fitter. His records show that he left the navy 31st March 1898. At some stage he re-enlisted, 1901 census shows he is in the Royal Navy.

TANNER Frederick Ernest Restal. Private 43344, 1st Worcestershire Regiment killed in action 14th October 1918, aged 19. Born at Marston Meysey, Wiltshire in 1899 and lived at Minchinhampton , Gloucestershire.
He was the son of William and Harriett who in 1911 were living at Fennell Cottage, Lypiatt, near Stroud, Gloucestershire. His father was granted a war gratuity on the 27th March 1919, revised on the 6th December 1919. At rest in Douai British Cemetery, Cuincy, France.
TANNER William George Born in 1895 at Avening Gloucestershire. Son of George Henry and Lucy Ann, nee Newman In 1901 he was living with his parents and siblings at Star Lane, Avening. 1911 with his parents in Avening near the Post Office. (High Street, Tetbury Hill and Hampton Hill junction. ), occupation, labourer aged 15. He died at his home, Nags Head, Avening, October 1921 and was laid to rest on the 22nd October 1921 aged 28 I can only asume in Holy Cross Churchyard, Avening, Gloucestershire

He joined the Gloucestershire Regiment at the depot, Horfield, Gloucestershire on the 24th August 1914 aged 19 as Private 70712, occupation, baker, and lived at Avening, Gloucestershire. His next of kin was his father, (name given as George William), mother, Lucy Ann and brother Albert Victor. After he had completed his training he was posted to the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli from the 19th June 1915 to 22nd August 1915, then he returned to England. On the 3rd February 1916 posted to France, returning on the 19th May 1916.
He was wounded twice in action. Received a gunshot wound at Gallipoli, to his hand right hand and side of face. Again gunshot wound to a hand in the field at Loos on the 14th May 1916. He was medically discharged to pension as being no longer physically fit for war service.
Note. There was only one Lucy Ann Newman who married a Tanner in Gloucestershire Her husband was called George Henry. Albert Victor and his siblings mother's maiden name was NEWMAN. The census also shows George William Tanner, with wife called Lucy Ann, and children including William George and Albert Victor and his sons all living at Avening.

Son of Edward and Blanch . 1n 1901 he was living with his parents in the village of Coleshill Berkshire. His father was the village blacksmith. All the family were born at Avening, Gloucestershire. Buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension Rouen, France.
