Mary Jane (Cissie) DYSON, wife of Sergeant Arthur Dyson died 14th June 1916. At rest Down Cathedral New Cemetery, Downpatrick, County Down.
Some notes about Arthur from his army record.
Arthur DYSON, Private 5320, 1st West Riding Regiment, Duke of Wellington\'s. He enlisted aged 19 and 10th months on the 14th November 1896 at Halifax, Yorkshire. He was at the time of his enlistment serving with the 3rd West Riding Militia. He was by occupation a spinner and he lived at Paddock, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. On the 22th July 1899 he was promoted to Lance Corporal, the Corporal on the 1st June 1901, then Sergeant on the 26th October 1906.
He was permitted to extend his service to complete 12 years with the colours on the 27th July 1903. He re-engaged for the West Riding Regiment at Ranikhat on the 26th April 1907 for such terms as shall complete 21 years service. On the 18th April 1912 he was posted as Sergeant to the 2nd Battalion .
His next of kin was his mother, Ann Thornton, formerly Dyson. She was living at 2, Hill Rise, Linthwaite, Manchester Road, Huddersfield until he got married. He was married to Mary Jane Irvine, spinster at St Mathews, Oldmeldrum, Aberdeen on the 30th August 1905. They had issue, Gordon Davies Craig born at Sitapur on the 14th January 1909, Amy Olivia born at Ambala on the 13th January 1912 and Arthur born at Dublin, on the 11th July 1913.
On the 13th November 1918 he was retained in the services as Sergeant under the Military Service Act 1916. He was later to be appointed Acting Company Sergeant Major on the 17th December 1918.
He was discharged from the army on the 7th February 1920 as A/CSM to his home at 25, Eden Vale Road, Sunderland suffering from Bronchitis.
He had served in Malta from the 24th September 1894 to 14th February 1898, West Indies from the 15th February 1898 to 26th December 1901, India from the 5th October 1905 to 17th April 1912, England on the 18th.
The 1911 (Military) Census shows his wife Mary Jane, born at Downpatrick, County Down, Ireland was in India with her husband and child, Gordon Davies Craig aged 2.
