Battlefield Cross of 752 Sergeant Arthur Cyril Sheppard DCM.1st/8th Sherwood Foresters.He was killed in action 22nd November 1915 and is buried inSt. Vaast Post Military Cemetery, France On the Cross the IWGC have him as Shephard his birth was registered as Sheppard
He was the son of Arthur and Fanny Elizabeth nee Wingfield. (They were married in 1877)
He was born in 1890 at Woodhouse, Southwell, Nottinghamshire.
His parents in 1881 were residing in Station Road, Southwell and may be the same place in 1891. 1901 shows him with his siblings and parents at Thirklington Road (Jenkins Homes) Southwell. In 1911 they are now residing at Waterloo House, Southwell, Nottingham and his occupation as working in a lace factory.

He enlisted at Southwell Nottingham on the 21st September 1908 at the age of 18yrs and 10 months. His medical was at Scarborough on the 2nd august 1909. His occupation was working in the lace factory for Carey and Son, Lace maker
He served in France from the 2nd March 1915 until his death in the field on the 22nd November 1915, total of 266 days.
He was appointed Lance Corporal on the 15th July 1910 and then Lance Sergeant 1st November 1914
He was promoted to sergeant, in the field on the 2nd August 1915.
London Gazette dated 15th September 1915 as Lance Sergeant. It was reported he was awarded the (DCM) Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous gallantry on the 30th July 1915 at Ypres when on his own initiative, he led a bombing party, under heavy bomb and rifle fire against the attacking enemy. Having thrown all his grenades, he went back and brought up a fresh supply and later having lost five men he brought up reinforcement.
