Son of Matthew and Sarah Julia Brocklehurst (nee Bailey), husband of Jessie Brocklehurst (nee Wooliscroft
27 September 1914 he joined up aged 24, occupation collier.
24 June 1915 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and posted to 1st/6th North Staffordshire Regiment.
28 July 1915 he embarked for France.
23 April 1916 he was admitted to 50th Field Ambulance suffering from a left inguinal hernia.
26 April 1916 he was admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital Rouen, France and then to 3rd Stationary Hospital.
2 June 1916 he was transferred from 3rd Stationary Hospital and invalided to England on hospital ship Western Australia.
3 June 1916 he was admitted to Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital, Whitchurch near Cardiff.
29 July 1916 he was discharged from hospital after suffering from nephritis.
9 August 1916 he was admitted to Stoke on Trent War Hospital, later to Sandon Hall Red Cross Hospital, discharged 27 October 1916.
27 October 1916 he was reported absent from Tattoo at Rugeley Camp from 4.30pm until 30 October 1916, 2 days and 181/2 hours. In front of Col O’Donoghue the following day and reverted to Private and forfeits 3 days’ pay.
15 January 1917 he joined his unit in the field.
22 May 1918 he was treated at 23rd Casualty Clearing Station for the effects of shell gases.
2 July 1918 he re-joined his unit.
3 October 1918 he was killed in action.
20 June 1919 reported in London Gazette that he had been awarded the Military Medal for action taken.
At rest at Montbrehain British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Extract from a Newspaper cutting on a family tree on Ancestry.co.uk –
“Mr Matthew Brocklehurst, newsagent, of 189 Leek Road, Hanley and old soldier has members and relatives serving king and country. Eldest son, Corporal Matthew Brocklehurst in training with the 10th North Staffordshire Regiment, Lance Corporal Arthur Brocklehurst is with the 9th North Staffordshire Regiment, Driver Richard Brocklehurst with the Royal Horse Artillery 10th Battery MHOW Brigade. Two sons in law of Mr Brocklehurst, who have enlisted since the start of the war are Sapper George Kelly Royal Engineers, husband of Lucy Brocklehurst and Private Joe Cliff Royal Fusiliers.”
Driver Richard Brocklehurst was born 28 March 1891 and died 1 December 1964. Service Number 67927.
Sergeant Matthew Brocklehurst born 1881 died 1960 at Newcastle under Lyme. Service Number 12047.
Private Joseph Cliff Royal Fusiliers. Service Number 14422 Gunner No. 191848 Royal Garrison Artillery.
9 April 1915 he joined the Royal Fusiliers at Hounslow.
1 June 1915 to 20 July 1917 he was in France.
23 February 1917 he had a compulsory transfer to Royal Garrison Artillery.
14 September 1918 discharged from the Army.
