MARSHAL Alan. Private 163, 15th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died of enteric fever, 23rd July 1915. The son of Samuel and Agnes Marshal, of The Bungalow, Esk, Queensland. At rest in Pieta Cemetery, Malta.
McCREEDY Robert James. Trooper, 74, 2nd Australian Light Horse. Died of sickness, 16th November 1915. Born at Brisbane, Queensland, enlisted at Enoggera, Queensland on the 17th September 1914 aged 24 and 7 months, occupation, shunter. Next of kin was his father, Elias of Vulture Street, West End, Brisbane, Queensland. On the 29th May 1915 he was wounded by shrapnel in his face at Gallipoli. Invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship, Neuralia on the 31st May 1914. Admitted into Military Hospital, St Andrews Malta on the 4th June 1915. The 26th June 1915 he was discharged to the Depot at Fort Ricasoli Malta, To duty on the 19th July 1915 at Gallipoli on Hospital Ship Ascania. On the 7th November 1915 he fell ill and was admitted into hospital suffering from severe cholecystitis. On the 14th November 1915 he was admitted into Military Hospital, Cottonera, Malta He died of pneumonia 16th November 1915 and laid to rest the same day by Chaplain A G McKinnon at Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
McDOUGALL Charles Reynolds. 2nd Lieutenant, 2nd, Australian Infantry. died of pneumonia, 16th August 1915, aged 20 years. The son of Henry Leslie and Emily McDougall. Born in Maitland, New South Wales
McKERN Howard Taylor. Corporal 454, 4th Australian Infantry. Died 16th August 1915 aged 22. Son of James and Mary Eldridge McKern, of "Murrurundi," 17, Redan Street, Mosman, New South Wales. Born at Sydney. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
McKINNON Alexander. Trooper, 537, 1st Australian Light Horse. Died of his wounds, 1st September 1915. Born at Morayshire Scotland, enlisted at Sydney, New South Wales 26th August 1914 aged 31, occupation, miner. He had previously served in the army, he resigned and then he was in the South African Constabulary and Naval Police. His property and effects were left to his sister, Mary McKinnon of City Hospital, Little Bromwich, England, and later at Military Hospital, Thornhill, Aldershot, England. His father, A McKinnon lived at Pilglassie, Scotland. He embarked to Gallipoli on the 9th May 1915. Wounded on the 7th August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsular, invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship, Dunluce Castle and died of his gun shot wounds to his legs in Military Hospital, Valetta 1st September 1915 At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
McLEAN Edgar Gordon. Private, 1796, 27th Australian Infantry. Died of his wounds, 5th December 1915, aged 21 years. The son of Alexander and Jane Caroline McLean, of 172 Avenue Helensdale, Glenelg, South Australia. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
McPHEE Archie. Private, 2026, 16th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died of his wounds, 2nd October 1915. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. Some notes from his army records. He joined up on the 22nd February 1915 aged 36 years and 2 months. He gave his next of kin a friend, Mrs N Suligan, of The Post Office, Katanning, Western Australia, later Mis Mary Jones of 38 Union Street, Subiaco, Western Australia and his next of kin. He was wounded in Gallipoli on the 27th August 1915. he received a shrapnel wound to his left thigh and was treated at No 4, Field Ambulance at Gallipoli. He was transferred to No16 Casualty Clearing Station, Mudros on the 28th August On the 4th September 1915 he was transferred to Malta on Hospital Ship, Devanha and was admitted into Tigne Hospital, Malta where he died of his wounds at 8.30am on the 2nd October 1915 and was laid to rest in Pieta Military Cemetery the same day. After his death it was discovered that he had a father, who was still alive and that his estate had to go to him. When contact was made it was discovered that his father was unaware that his son had joined the army, and that he had also changed his name. His correct name was Gustave Gunther and his father was Hermann of Calcoote, near Murray Bridge, South Australia. I can understand why he charged his name from Gustave Gunther to Archie McPhee.
McRAE John Hugh. Trooper 724, 1st Australian Light Horse died 15th August 1915 aged 22. Son of William Hugh and Mary McRae, of Inverness Barellan, New South Wales. Born at Windsor, Victoria, Australia. At rest in Addolorata Cemetery, Malta.
MELLEY Stirling Roy. Private 2205, 13th Australian Infantry died 12th August 1915 aged 19. Son of Edward and Rose Ann Melley. Born at Sydney, New South Wales and enlisted Liverpool, New South Wales on the 13th May 1915 aged 19 and 6 months, occupation, paper bag machinist. His next of kin was his wife, Marguerita, known as Rita, of 18 Cooper Street, Double Bay, New South Wales, later of Kibo Road, Rigcuts Park, Lidcombe, N.S.W. He was wounded by shrapnel to his hips and chest on the 7th August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsular. He was invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship, Dunluce Castle. On the 11th August he was reported as dangerously ill in a hospital at Malta and died the following day. At rest in Addolorata Cemetery, Malta
MERCER George Alexander. Private 1386, C Company, 9th Australian Infantry. Died 21st July 1915. Born at Gympie, Queensland New South Wales, enlisted at Rockhampton, Queensland on the 7th December 1914 aged 28 and 4 months, occupation, miner. His next of kin was his wife Alice Mary Mercer of Gladstone, Queensland. She later remarried to a Coops He died of enteric fever on the 21st July 1915 at Military Hospital, Imtarfa and laid to rest the following day by Reverend M Tobias at Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.

MERCER-SMITH Harry. Lance Corporal, 995, 9th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died of his wounds, 17th June 1915, aged 22 years. The son of Sydney and Amy Mercer-Smith, of Camoola, Gladstone Road, South Brisbane, Queensland. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
MERRITT Percival Charles. Private, 568, 11th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died of enteric fever (Typhoid), on the 26th October 1915, aged 30 years. He was the son of Mr. J.A.F. and Ann Merritt, of Clarendon, South Australia
Some notes from his army record. He enlisted on the 3rd September 1914 aged 29. He was a miner and lived at 13, Wilson Street, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. He embarked from Freemantle, Western Australia on HMAT A11, Ascanius on the 2nd November 1914. He is also commemorated on a family memorial in Kangarilla Cemetery, South Australia (Headstone inscription reads 'For King and Country'). Parents: Mr F. and Mrs Ann MERRITT, Clarendon, South Australia. His brother Private 2944 Sydney Laurence, 13th Field Ambulance was killed in action 26th April 1918. MERRY Frederick Hanson. Corporal, 1389, 1st Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died of his wounds, 14th August 1915, aged 23 years. The son of Thomasina Merry and the late James Belford Merry of 11 Church Avenue, Dolphin Barr . Born in Dublin, Ireland, enlisted at Liverpool, New South Wales on the 2nd November 1914 aged 21, occupation, grocer. His sister J H Merry of Coolock House, Coolock, County Dublin. While in action at the Gallipoli He was shot and wounded in the skull on the 7th August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsular. He was invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship, Dunluce Castle on the 12th August and died in the 14th August 1915 of his wounds at Baviere Hospital, Malta. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta
MOREY James Lawrence. Private 2411, 10th Australian Infantry died 20th November 1915 aged 32. Son of James and Mary Morey, of Beulah Road, Norwood, South Australia. He was born on Kangaroo Island, South Australia and enlisted at Keswick, South Australia on the 25th March 1915 aged 33 and 1 month, occupation, labourer. His father, James of Bulah Road, Norwood, South Australia was his next of kin. He embarked from Kingstown on the 11th September 1915 for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He was taken on strength at Gallipoli on the 17th September 1915. He was taken ill at Gallipoli on the 19th October 1915 suffering from gastric and was treated at 1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Gallipoli. Invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship Soudan He was admitted into St John's Hospital, Sliema on the 8th November 1914 and died of pneumonia on the 20th November from acute lobar pneumonia. At rest in Addolorata Cemetery, Malta.
