Anzac Memorial at the Argotti Botanical Gardens in Floriana, Malta

Extended Description
ADAIR Hugh. Trooper 11/959. B Squadron, Wellington Mounted Rifles New Zealand Expeditionary Force. On the 4th September 1915 he was admitted to No 16 Casualty Clearing Station suffering from adenitis from Anzac Cove and transferred to Mudros the same day. On the 10th September 1915 he was evacuated ill from Mudros on Hospital Ship, Neuralia to Malta, where he died of enteric fever on the 3rd October 1915. He was born on the 11th October 1893 at Bangor, Ireland to Hugh and Mary Adair, of Spring Hill, Bangor, Co. Down, Ireland. His next was his brother, Henry of 23 Corporation Street, Belfast, Ireland then his elder sister, Mrs Ruby Clay of Coolbeg, Ashford, Middlesex. He joined up on the 15th December 1914 and embarked New Zealand on H,M.N.Z.T No 19 on the 15th December 1914 bound for Suez. He disembarked at Suez (in transit) on the 13th February 1915. Embarked Suez on the 27th March 1915 bound for Egypt. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
ALEXANDER William Andrew . Private, 10/205, Wellington Regiment, N.Z.E.F. Died 23rd August 1915, from his wounds. Aged 24 years. He was born on the 6th June 1891 to David and Martha Alexander, of West Gore, New Zealand. His occupation prior to enlistment was a school teacher at Dannevirke High School. His father was his next of kin. He joined up on the 14th August 1914 aged 23 years an he lived at Green Island, Dunedin, New Zealand. He embarked from New Zealand on the 14th August 1914 to Egypt on H.M.N.Z.T No 10, Disembarked at Egypt on the 4th December 1914. He was reported missing in action at the Dardanelles on the 18th August 1915. In fact he was wounded and was admitted to No 16 Casualty Clearing Station, with shrapnel wounds to his thigh and buttocks and the 18th, and then transferred to Base Camp Hospital. At date not recorded he was invalided to a hospital in Malta where he died of his wounds on the 23rd August 1915. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta
ARMSTRONG Robert Vernon Trooper, 7/1328, Canterbury M.R., New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He joined up on the 14th June 1915 and embarked for Egypt on the 14th August 1915. He was taken ill at Mudros date not recorded and later he was invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship, Glenart Castle, and admitted to Military Hospital, St Andrews on the 3rd December 1915. On the 4th December he was reported as being dangerously ill. This medical status remained until his passed away suffering from enteric fever on the 12th December 1915, aged 24 years. He was born on the 2nd August 1892 to George and Mary Jane Armstrong, of Balguerie Street, Akaroa, New Zealand, occupation, farmer. He is at rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta
ARNOLD Ronald. Private 6/883, Canterbury Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. On the 11th August 1915 he received a gun shot wound to one of his ankles at the Dardenelles and he was treated at No 11 Casualty Clearing Station, Anzac. He died 18th September 1915, from pyaemia, from wounds received in action, aged 32 years, in a Military Hospital, in Malta. He joined up on the 24th August 1914, occupation, gun maker embarked from New Zealand on H.M.N.Z.T. No 11 on the 15th October 1914, disembarked at Egypt on the 4th December 1914. He was born on the 26th January 1885 at Bedford, England to Robert and Sarah Arnold of Marshalls Row, Goldlington, Bedford. He was married on the 5th May 1907 to Florence Emily, nee Brown. She re-married after his death in 1919 to James Dallimore and she was living at 18 Beaconsfield Street, Bedford, Bedfordshire. His medals were sent to this address. Robert and Florence had three children. Doris Marjorie, born 1908, Ethel Florence, born 1910 and Robert Ronald. In 1911 he was living with his wife and two daughters, Doris Marjorie and Ethel Florence at 25 Albert Street, Bedford. He was employed as a gun makers assistant.

BESWICK Albert Edward. Lance Corporal 3/834 Field Ambulance, New Zealand Medical Corps. He was taken ill in the field, invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship, Assaye and admitted into Military Hospital St Patricks, Malta suffering from dysentery and died 26th October 1915 aged 21 and laid to rest the following day. Born on the 12th April 1894 at Wellington to William and Annie Beswick, of 37, Linton St., Palmerston North, Wellington, New Zealand. He joined upon the 15th July 1915, occupation, clerk and embarked for Egypt on the 29th July 1915. At rest in Addolorata Cemetery, Malta.
BIRDSALL William John. Trooper, 13/232, Auckland Mounted Rifles, N.Z.E.F. Died of his wounds, 22nd June 1915, aged 20 years. He was born on the 10th June 1894 to John Bowden and Isabel Birdsall, of Whangateau, Rodney, New Zealand. He joined up on the 8th September 1914 aged 20 years and 1 month, occupation, farmer. While on active service he received a gun shot wound to his back at Gallipoli. He was invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship, Soudan and admitted into Military Hospital, Valletta on the 20th June 1915 and he died of his wounds on the 22nd June 1915. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
BLACK William. Private, 10/280, Wellington Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, died of enteric fever, 2nd October 1915. He was born on the 19th April 1891 to Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Black, of Spring Creek, Marton, New Zealand. He joined up on the 18th August 1914, embarked for the Mediterranean. While on active service he reported sick with septic hands. At some date, (not recorded) he was invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship, Nile and admitted into Military Hospital, Imtarfa, Malta on the 8th September 1915. He died of enteric fever as the hospital at 3-30 am and he was laid to rest the same day in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
BOYLE William. Trooper 11/740 Wellington Mounted Rifles, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. While he was at Anzac Cove he was admitted into No 1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station with shrapnel wound to a wrist. He was transferred onto a Fleet Sweeper on the 20th July 1916 and later that day transferred to Hospital Ship Somali, bound for Malta. He was admitted into a military hospital in Malta on the 31st July 1915 and died 4th August 1915 of pneumonia . His next of kin was his brother Eugene Boyle, of 3, Edward Lane, Darlington, Sydney, Australia . He was born on the 26th December 1876 at Sydney, New South Wales, and joined up on the 21st October 1915 aged 37 years, occupation farmer. He lived at Kiri Kau, Whanganui River, North Island, New Zealand. He embarked from New Zealand on the 14th December 1914, disembarked at Egypt on the 3rd January 1915. At rest in Addolorata Cemetery, Malta.
BRIDLE Fred William. Private, 6/2395, Canterbury Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He reported sick in the field and on the 27th August 1915 invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship Ascanius , admitted into hospital on the 31st August 1915 and died of dysentry 9th September 1915, aged 25 years. He was born on the 6th February 1889 to Sidney William and Emily Bridle, of Croydon, Surrey. He joined up on the 1st May 1915 aged 25 years and 10 months. Occupation, labourer for Auckland City Council. His next of kin was his sister, Emily of 48 Third Avenue, Kingsland, Auckland, later as Mrs Emily Butler of Huntly West, Waikato. He embarked for Egypt on H.M.N.Z.T. No 25 on the 13th June 1915. He joined his unit on the 9th August 1915 in the field. His medal were sent to his brother, Albert Victor at 35 Lambeth Road, West Croydon, Surrey. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
BRISLANE Michael Edward. Trooper, 7/533, Canterbury Mounted Rifles, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Died of gun shot wounds to his spine, 20th August 1915, aged 20 years. He was born on the 1st August 1894 to Mrs. E. Wilson, of Mount Buckley, Greymouth, New Zealand. He joined up aged 20 years on the 25th August 1914 occupation, farm labourer. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
BROWN John Martin. Private, 2/1424A, Wellington Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He joined to army on the 11th December 1914 aged 29 years and 7 months, occupation, telegraph linesman. He died of enteric fever which he contracted while in action at the Dardanelles. He was treated for his illness on the field, later he was invalided to a hospital in Malta on Hospital Ship, Valdivia, admitted into hospital on the 20th August and died on the 28th August 1915. He was born on the 30th April 1884 to Samuel John and Jessie Brown, of Scandia Street, Palmerston North, New Zealand, . At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
BRYANT John Joseph. Trooper 11/862 B Squadron, 4th Wellington Mounted Rifles, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He was taken ill at Mudros, invalided to Malta on Hospital Ship Gloucester Castle on the 28th November 1915 died 3rd December 1915 aged 24 at St Patricks Hospital, Malta . He was born on the 3rd December 1889 toJoseph and Eliza Alves Bryant, of Kenmure Rd., Mornington, Dunedin, New Zealand. Formerly Lieutenant in the Hiberian Defence Cadets. His occupation prior to enlistment was a farrier for the New Zealand Railways. He joined up on the 14th December 1914 and embarked for Mudros on the 17th April 1915 aged 25 years and 4 months. According to his army records he was laid to rest at Imtarfa Military Cemetery, originally written down as Pieta Military Cemetery, but he is at rest in Addolorata Cemetery, Malta.
