Viewer message from Mike Wade, Thanks Mike :) @28th61st

Thank you very much for putting this here - their father, Sergeant David Alexander, was my great great grandfather.

I believe that some of the Extended Description is inaccurate, so I thought you might be interested in the following if you'd like to update it (feel free to use as much or as little of this as you like):

1) Anne Georgiana Alexander was born in Malta on 5th Feb 1845 and baptised on 2nd Mar 1845 (baptism record). She died on 17th Aug 1845 (family records) and was buried on 18th Aug 1845 (burial record). She is Anne Georgiana in the baptism and family records, but Anne Georgina in the burial record. Her father David was a Corporal at that time. She was his first child.

2) Francis Elizabeth Alexander was born in Malta on 26th Jan 1848 and baptised on 19th Mar 1848 (baptism record). She died on 15th Oct 1848 (family records) and was buried on 16th Oct 1848 (burial records). She is Francis Elizabeth in the baptism, burial and family records, but seems to be Frances Elizabeth on the gravestone. Her father was a Sergeant at that time. She was his third child and second daughter.

3) I assume the date of 1849 on the gravestone must be the date that the memorial stone was erected, since it is not the date of their deaths.

4) Family records say they were both buried in Rock Gate Cemetery, so I believe the gravestone was moved to Msida Bastion Cemetery after Rock Gate Cemetery was destroyed in WW2.

5) David Alexander was in the 3rd Company, 8th Battalion of the Royal Artilley, stationed in Malta from 1844 to 1850 (or maybe very early 1851). Military records say he was Garrison Gunner in Valetta on 22nd Dec 1846 (though I don't know what that means). His first four children, two sons and the above two daughters, were born in Malta. His father, father-in-law, and four of his brothers were also in the Royal Artillery.

6) David Alexander's wife's name was Anne (maiden name McGowan), and she was the mother of all of his children.

Thank you for all this information your great great grandfather. It is so enlightening to learn the background of the family. The service men and women must never be forgotten but their offspring, who were left behind, deserve the same remembrance.
