Anna Maud Grene BARRY. Nurse VAD, attached to Sutton Veny Military Hospital.

Born 5 February 1892 to James Grene and Mary Barry, nee Kane of Ballyneety, Co. Limerick, Ireland. Birth registered as Anna Maud Barry. At the time of her birth her mother and father were residing at 90 George Street, Limerick. 1901 1911 with her parents and siblings at 1 Friarstown, Ballybricken, Limerick.

She was a passenger on R.M.S. "Leinster" was torpedoed in the Irish Sea, 16 miles east of Dublin, on the morning of 10th October 1918. The ship was travelling from Kingstown (now Dun Laoghaire), Dublin, to Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales. Three torpedoes were fired at the ship by a German submarine, UB-123. The first torpedo missed, but the second hit the mail room, and the third hit the engine room. There were over 770 people on board, comprising crew, civilians, military personnel (including medical staff of doctors and nurses), and postal sorters. It is now thought that of these, there were over 550 casualties.
She died 10 October 1918 aged 26, her body was not recovered.

Commemorated on the Brookwood 1914-1918 Memorial, Surrey.

She is in fact at rest in Rockstown Cemetery, Fedamore, County Limrick, Ireland

THE LATE MISS GRENE BARRY -

The remains of the late Miss Anna Maud Grene-Barry, V.A.D, younger daughter of Mr. James Grene-Barry, D.L., Sandville, who lost her life in the sinking of the Royal Mail steamer "Leinster" on Thursday, arrived in Limerick yesterday by the 1.15 train from Kingsbridge. The remains were met at the terminus by a large concourse of the citizens, and the funeral took place immediately for the family burial place at Rockstown. The deceased young lady was a general favourite, and her death under such tragic circumstances has evoked general sympathy for her father and family in their bereavement.

The chief mourners were:-
Mr. Jas. Grene Barry, D.L. (father)
Mr. J.T. Grene Barry, C.E., (brother)
Mr. N. Barry, Manager, National Bank, Ennis.
