Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined up on the 6th March 1894 aged 18 years and 4 months. He was born in 1876 at Felixstowe, Suffolk to George and Charlotte, his occupation prior to enlistment was a groom. He was posted to the Suffolk Regiment Depot, Bury St Edmunds as private 3793.
He was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 8th September 1897, Corporal on the 14th February 1902.
Permission was given for his to extend his period of service to complete 12 years with the colours. On the 2nd May 1903 while at Karachi, Pakistan he re-engaged to complete 21 years with the colours. 20th August 1903 he was transferred to Bombay, 13th May 1907 posted to the Depot and 27th May 1907 posted to the 1st Suffolk Regiment.
His postings -
India, 21st October 1896 to 19th December 1901. East Indies, 1st March 1902 to 13th May 1907. Malta from the 20th November 1907 to 24th January 1911. Egypt, 25th January 1911 to 7th July 1913. Curragh, County Kildare, 23rd September 1913. France with the British Expeditionary Force from the 13th August 1914 to 18th November 1914. Back to England on the 19th November 1914 to his discharged from the army on the 4th March 1916 after completing 22 years service.
He suffered from Malaria. He was admitted into Curragh Camp Military Hospital, County Kildare from 3rd April 1914 to 20th April 1914. While in France admitted to 3rd General Hospital, at Le Treport, invalided to England on the 15th November 1914 on Hospital Ship, Asturias. Re-admitted into Military Hospital at Bury St Edmunds, Eastern District on the 19th January 1915 to 2nd March 1915 and finally on the 14th December 1915 admitted into Cliff Military Hospital, Felixstowe, discharged form hospital on the 27th December 1915.
Next of Kin was his mother, Charlotte, then his sister, Alice of Chamber Cottage, Felixstowe, his first wife, Ann Elizabeth, then his 2nd wife Mary Jane who was with him in Bombay and Malta. There was only one child recorded - William Walter Warner born on the 29th March 1913 at Cairo, baptised on the 27th April 1913 at Cairo by the Reverend L.H. Glen.
His first marriage was on the 11th January 1905 to Elizabeth Ann SMY, at the Wesleyan Methodist Military and Naval Church, Bombay.
His second marriage was on the 8th December 1910 to Mary Jane Child, born 1877 at Okehampton, Devon, widow, at Wesleyan Methodist Church, Floriana, Malta.
Mary Jane Child was married on the 8th April 1901 at St Augustine Church, Hackney,Middlesex, as Miss Mary Jane HEGGATON aged 24. daughter of John Heggaton. Her husband was Walter William Albert CHILD. Sergeant 11389, Royal Artillery. Aged 24 son of Walter David Child. Her husband died on the 13th August 1908 at Bombay. He was Sergeant, Royal Artillery in charge of the Ordnance Depot and 2nd Royal Scots, stores. He was born at Hackney, occupation, butcher and enlisted on the 21st January 1896. His widow was granted a gratuity on the 12th March 1909.
