Alwyne James GALVIN. Flying Officer (Pilot) 417044 Royal New Zealand Air Force attached 60 Operational Training Unit at RAF High Ercall, Shropshire
Born at Thames New Zealand 26 August 1920 to John and Kathleen Galvin, nee Ganley of Turua Auckland, New Zealand.
Enlisted 21 December 1941 at Levin. Embarked 11 April 1942 from New Zealand to Canada for training. He was attached to No 7 Service Training School as instructor. Embarked for UK 14 December 1943. Posted to 60 OCU the 1 February 1944. He was pilot of de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito II, DZ718 along with Sgt Jack Bramwell RAF which took off from RAF Ercall on a night intruder exercise in good weather conditions over County Down, Northern Ireland. The plane crashed into a hillside 3 miles east of Dromore County Down, Northern Ireland at 00.24 hrs on the 14 March 1944. It is believed that the aircraft may have stalled during a tight turn. Both died at the scene, he was aged 23 years.
