25 February 1915 he was in hospital on the departure of 1st North Midland Ammunition Column.

4 November 1915 still as acting Sergeant, he was transferred to 26th Battalion.
14 May 1916 he was on a Medical Board at Hounslow and discharged due to Tubercle of Lung, which originated from an old infection.
15 May 1916 he reverted back to Private still with 26th Battalion.
30 May 1916 he was discharged at Hounslow to his home at 6 Mulberry Street, Hanley.
30 August 1916 he was discharged from the Army, no longer physically fit for war service after serving 234 days.
He died 1918 at Hanley aged 34.

5 June 1915 he was transferred to 3rd General Hospital Le Treport with a gunshot wound to the head.
23 June 1915 he was discharged and transferred to 5th Infantry Base Depot at Rouen.
3 September 1915 he was killed in action and laid to rest at 13th Infantry Brigade Burial Ground, South West Edge of village of Carnoy (now known as Carnoy Military Cemetery).

22 January 1917 he enlisted aged 17 years and 11 months, occupation Waggoner in a Pit and put to Army Reserve. At the time his next of kin was his Father David, 176 Fenton Road, Hanley. Last employer Berryhill Colliery, Stoke on Trent and had 2 years’ experience as a Collier.
25 February 1918 mobilised at Burslem.
28 February 1918 posted to Royal Field Artillery.
20 April 1918 he was admitted with symptoms of bronchitis to Athlone military Hospital.
17 May 1918 discharged from hospital and transferred to Curragh Hospital with tubercle of the lung.
17 September 1918 discharged medically unfit, at Athlone with Tubercle of the Lung, aggravated by War Service. Recommended for Sanitorium treatment. He was treated at Stanfield Sanatorium, Burslem.
14 January 1919 before a medical board and discharged from the Army.
He was awarded a Silver Badge.

27 September 1907 he was on Company Orders, in front of Major S W Hare, for the offense of gambling in the Barrack Room and not complying with an order. He was given 10 days confined to Barracks. Whilst in Malta he was drunk in Cottonera about 9.15pm one evening and was again confined to Barracks for 10 days.
16 September 1910 he was arrested for urinating on bedding and being drunk in open arrest at St Andrews Barracks, Malta at 9pm.
17 September 1910 he was again on Company Orders, in front of Major W J Long and was again given 10 days confined to barracks. There are several other charges, which due to the condition of the ‘Burnt Records’ are very difficult to read. Some of the charges involved smuggling cigarettes into the Guard Room for which he received 10 days confined to Barracks and other charges involving alcohol.

The sentences were variable of 112 days detention. Signed at Rugeley Camp 1916. At the time of his Court Martial he was with 10th (2nd Reserve) Bn. North Staffordshire Regiment.
9 February 1916 until his death he served in France.

His disability was ‘Tubercle of Lung 100% permanent disability to be treated in a Sanitorium’.
A war gratuity was awarded to his mother Ann 9 December 1921.
