In the North-West quarter of the cemetery is a memorial stone stating “This stone commemorates twelve men of “L” Battery Royal Horse Artillery who fell in the *Affair of Nery on the 1st September 1914 of whom seven are buried here and five at Verberie, French National Cemetery.” One of the seven is Ernest Brown.

He was residing at 6 Mulberry Street, Hanley and at the time of his enlistment he was still serving with the 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment.
29 September 1914 he joined (embodied service) at Shelton, aged 32 as Gunner No. 503 North Midlands (Home Service) Staffordshire Royal Garrison Artillery.
30 September 1914 he was promoted to Corporal
17 December 1914 he was promoted to Sergeant.
25 March 1915 he transferred to 2/3rd Royal Field Artillery and later transferred to 1st North Midland Ammunition Column, Gunner No. 574.
29 September 1914 to 11 September 1915 he did duty at Hartshill.
25 February 1915 he was in hospital on the departure of 1st North Midland Ammunition Column.
25 March 1915 discharged from hospital, attached to 2nd/5th Battery Roya Field Artillery.
4 September 1915 he was ordered to home by an Army Doctor.
11 September 1915 discharged as Sergeant - Para 392 (XVI) King’s Regulations being no longer physically fit for military service, due to a medical board 3 September 1915, at Hemel Hempstead.
11 September 1915 discharged from Hemel Hempstead and the unit he was attached to was, as recorded in his Army records, 1st/1st Divisional Ammunition Column North Midlands Territorial Force attached to 2/5th North Staffordshire Royal Field Artillery Battery 2/3rd North Midlands Territorial Army Brigade. He was aged 33 and his disability was Tuberculosis. He was treated for his condition by having 75 Tuberculosis injections during 1911 and his condition had deteriorated since his enlistment.
He was awarded a Silver Badge on roll no. 1182.
9 October 1915 he re-enlisted at Stoke, occupation assistant Fireman (potteries) living with his family at 6 Mulberry Street, Hanley and was 32 years and 9 months. 14 October 1915 he re-joined at Hornchurch as Private No. 3739 25th Middlesex Regiment (Pioneer Corp).
13 October 1915 he was posted 25th Middlesex Regiment as Private.
15 October 1915 promoted to Acting Sergeant with 25th Battalion.
4 November 1915 still as acting Sergeant, he was transferred to 26th Battalion.
14 May 1916 he was on a Medical Board at Hounslow and discharged due to Tubercle of Lung, which originated from an old infection.
15 May 1916 he reverted back to Private still with 26th Battalion.
30 May 1916 he was discharged at Hounslow to his home at 6 Mulberry Street, Hanley.
30 August 1916 he was discharged from the Army, no longer physically fit for war service after serving 234 days.
He died 1918 at Hanley aged 34.
A war gratuity was awarded to his widow Bertha Elizabeth 15 September 1919.

8 January 1915 he was posted to 3rd Battalion.
28 April 1915 he was transferred to Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment).
From 4 May 1915 he served in France.
3 June 1915 he was wounded in the field.
5 June 1915 he was transferred to 3rd General Hospital Le Treport with a gunshot wound to the head.
23 June 1915 he was discharged and transferred to 5th Infantry Base Depot at Rouen.
3 September 1915 he was killed in action and laid to rest at 13th Infantry Brigade Burial Ground, South West Edge of village of Carnoy (now known as Carnoy Military Cemetery).
27 May 1917 when Army Form W3080 giving details of his living relatives was completed, it is noted that his brother George Henry Humphreys aged 31 was a serving soldier in India.

20 April 1918 he was admitted with symptoms of bronchitis to Athlone military Hospital.
17 May 1918 discharged from hospital and transferred to Curragh Hospital with tubercle of the lung.
17 September 1918 discharged medically unfit, at Athlone with Tubercle of the Lung, aggravated by War Service. Recommended for Sanitorium treatment. He was treated at Stanfield Sanatorium, Burslem.

Whilst in Malta he was drunk in Cottonera about 9.15pm one evening and was again confined to Barracks for 10 days.
16 September 1910 he was arrested for urinating on bedding and being drunk in open arrest at St Andrews Barracks, Malta at 9pm.
17 September 1910 he was again on Company Orders, in front of Major W J Long and was again given 10 days confined to barracks. There are several other charges, which due to the condition of the ‘Burnt Records’ are very difficult to read. Some of the charges involved smuggling cigarettes into the Guard Room for which he received 10 days confined to Barracks and other charges involving alcohol.

Director of Johnson Brothers, Hanley.
Johnson was educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge and served in the South African War 1899-1902 with the 1st Volunteer Company, North Staffordshire Regiment. He re-joined his Regiment in August 1914, proceeded to France in February 1915 and was promoted to Captain in August of that year. He was present at Neuve Chapelle, Wulvrghem, Hill 60 and Vermelles and was reported missing after the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt, 13th October 1915, when out of 200 men of his Company, only 5 returned. It was later confirmed that he had been killed while leading his Company on that occasion.

12 March 1916 he enlisted and transferred to Army Reserve.
8 June 1917 he was mobilised at Hanley, aged 18, residence 98 Botteslow Street, Hanley, occupation glost placer.
18 April 1918 he was in front of Lt. Colonel P Kirk on the offence of losing Government property and ??? equipment. He was given 10 days No. 1 Field Punishment - Field Punishment Number One, often abbreviated to "F.P. No. 1" or even just "No. 1", consisted of the convicted man being placed in fetters and handcuffs or similar restraints and attached to a fixed object, such as a gun wheel or a fence post, for up to two hours per day.
27 April 1918 he was reported missing in France with the 1st/8th Durham Light Infantry.
He was taken prisoner of war, dates unknown and after his release was admitted to Hospital, Complimentaire, Sezanne, Marne, France.
15 April 1919 he was on a medical board at Stoke War Hospital.
6 May 1919 he was discharged from the Army from Stoke War Hospital.
4 September 1919 he was issued a War Badge.

19 May 1905 he was posted to 99th Battery Royal Field Artillery.
13 March 1908 transferred to Section “B” Army Reserve.
5 August 1914 he was mobilised.
17 August 1914 to 3 December 1916 he was in France.
3 December 1916 he returned to Depot in England.
15 February 1916 he joined his unit.
31 December 1916 he was posted 4 Section 24th DAC (Divisional Ammunition Column) at Rouen, France.
14 April 1917 he embarked from Southampton and disembarked at Le Havre on the same day.
4 January 1918 he left France for England.
18 June 1918 he was posted to North Staffordshire Regiment Depot to continue his service under the National Service Regulation.
1 March 1919 at Woolwich he was transferred to Class A (demobilised).
