- Alfred SMEDLEY. Private 6230, 2nd Derbyshire Regiment
Born 1880 to William and Mary Smedley, nee Madin. 1881 Residing with his parents and siblings at Barker Lane, Brampton, Derbyshire. 1891 residing with his siblings at the home of James and Sarah Woodhouse at 3 Steam Mill Bridge, Walton, Derbyshire.
Notes from his army record -
Joined the Derbyshire Regiment as boy soldier 22 April 1899 aged 17 years and 5 months, occupation, collier, resided at Brampton, Derbyshire. Previously served with 3rd Derbyshire Regiment. Regarding previous service his comment was – “No, except in the militia in which I am still serving.”
Army Form B.203 - Application for special enlistment of a Recruit, or for the retention of a Recruit who has been specially enlisted. Request from the Officer Commanding 45th Regimental District.
Reason for recommendation - Good appearance, intelligent, likely to make an efficient soldier. Willing to serve on boys pay until he attained the age of 18 years.
Next of kin were given as brothers, John and William Smedly of Barker Lane, Brampton. Sisters Sarah Smedley same address and Nelly Smedley of Steam Mill Bridge, Walton, Chesterfield
Attained the age of 18 years, 22 November 1899 and posted the 2nd Battalion.
Posted to Malta 22 October 1899.
Died 22 August 1900 and struck off strength of the Battalion 23 August 1900
