M.S.
66518 W/S Capt (T/Major) Airey Middleton Sheffield NEAVE M.C. R.A.

(1) I should be grateful if you would consider the case of the above officer.

(2) As you will see from a citation which I enclose at 1A, Major NEAVE has, since his escape from Germany been employed firstly with I.S.9 (UK), which is under me, then with I.S.9 (W.E.A.), which is under S.H.A.E.F., and finally with I.S.9 (UK) again. At the same time his work throughout has been the same.

(3) It is evident the G.2, S.H.A.E.F., would not know his pervious background nor his follow-up after leaving them, and I feel that it falls to me to put forward a recommendation covering the whole period. I hope that I am in order in doing so.

(4) To Major NEAVE, more than to any other single officer goes the credit for the successful evacuation of thousands of Allied personnel from the Continent, not only by means of secrete organisations prior to “D” day but also through his personal intervention on the ground.

(5) I strongly recommend his for the immediate award of the D.S.O.

Dated 10 August 45.

I.S.9 (Intelligent School 9) In January 1942 IS9 was set up as part of MI9.
