Agnes McInnes CHEYNE. S.R.N., S.C.M. Matron 206099 QAIMNS

Born at Southampton, Hampshire

Trained at the Abbey Hospital, Paisley, 1916-1920.

Died at sea on Hospital Ship Newfoundland when it was sunk by German aircraft 13 September 1943 aged 51 years.

They were being transported to the Salerno beachhead. Six British nurses lost their lives, many others were injured and had to be evacuated to North Africa. None of the 103 American nurses on board were fatalities but all suffered a terrible experience on their way to care for the many casualties of the Battle for Italy.

Commemorated on the Cassino Memorial, Italy.
