Agnes Alethea (Mary) GENTLES

Agnes Alethea (Mary) GENTLES. Sister with the Colonial Nursing Service was based at the General Hospital, Alor Star, Kedah, Singapore.

Born 1898 in Wolverhampton to Thomas Lawrie and Margaret Mabel Gentles, nee James.
1901 residing with her mother and brother at 118 Vicarage Road, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. 1911 she school boarder at Clergy Daughter’s School, Casterton, Kirkby Longsdale, Westmorland.
12 August 1933 she embarked from Liverpool bound for Singapore aged 35. Last address in England 4 Adbolton Grove, West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, occupation, Nursing Sister. She was a passenger on the evacuation ship S.S. Kuala which was bombed and sunk by the Japanese off Pom Pong island 17 February 1942. She survived the bombing but was killed whilst swimming to shore at Pom Pong island. She died because she was wearing a lifejacket which stopped her from submerging when the Japanese bomber returned to strafe the survivors swimming to shore.

She is not listed with the CWGC
