Adrian Paul Ghislain CARTON de WIART. VC, KBE, CB, CMG, DSO
Served with the 4th Dragoon Guards. He was Adjutant of the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars 1912 -1914. With the Camel Corps in Somaliland 1914 -1915, wheer he lost his eye. Commanded the 8th Gloucestershire Regiment at La Boiselle in 1916 where he won the Victoria Cross. He had previously lost a hand and the men saw him tearing out the safety pins of bombs with his teeth. In 1941 his plane crashed off Libya, swan ashore and taken prisoner. He mad five escape attempts before being released in 1943 . He retired in 1947 and died in June 1963 aged 83.
