Able Seaman Wotherspoon and Camphuis

Able Seaman Steward Rebecca Wotherspoon and Able Seaman Writer Ruby Camphuis. HMAS Ballarat.

Able Seaman Writer or Steward, are naval ranks, maybe equal to Private First Class, Private Trained or a One Hook Private depending on who's military you are familiar with, as for the Writer part, it means she's likely in Administration, Stewards look after Officers and or run Public Services, like the Canteen on board the ship or manage the Mess etc.

As for the Seaman / Seawoman terminology, seaman is not a gender specific term, I'm sure BW if you called her a soldierette she'd pop you in the face just as fast as if you'd called her a seawoman or seaperson.
