A SAILOR OF THE GREAT WAR

Extended Description
Buried elsewhere in this churchyard a sailor of the Great War. Mercantile Marine of S.S. Planudes died 18 January 1917. The CWGC show all died 18 January 1917

Saturday, 20 January 1917, location North Sea . PLANUDES, 542/1900, A Nicholls, sailed from Tyne 18th for Trouville with coal, went missing, posted by Lloyds 7/3/17, “presumed by Admiralty to have been sunk by mine in North Sea”. Believed 20th - Confirmed as mined, laid by UC.43 (Erwin Sebelin), sank off Whitby, Yorkshire; 11 lives lost including master (H/L/te/un)


The below list are the names of the complete crew of S.S. Planudes (Middlesborough) who died 18th January 1917. One was laid to rest in St Stephen’s Churchyard, Fylingdales, Yorkshire, The location of the grave is not known. Any information as the the identity wold be very much appreciated.
