F095 ALBERT EDWARD BOWMAN. Able Seaman D/J93835 Royal Navy on HMS Avon Vale. Born 9 November 1902 at Plymouth Devon to Frederick Charles and Emily Anne Bowman, husband of Sylvia Rosella Bowman, nee Jones of Paignton, Devon. Enlisted 9 December 1918 on HMS Impregnable as Boy 2nd Class, Civilian occupation, labourer. Died 26 March 1942 aged 39 years as the result of a bullet through his throat, as the result of enemy action. His widow died 1995.
His father Frederick Charles fought and died in the Great War. He served as Private 14978, Coldstream Guards. Enlisted at Paignton, Devon, killed in Belgium 17 June 1916. On the 14 August 1916 his widow was granted a war gratuity, revised 30 August 1919. At rest in Essex Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium



F095 HENRY JAMES STANDING GUNN. Able Seaman D/JX191834 Royal Navy on Light Cruiser HMS Penelope (97) Born 28 December 1910 at St Machar Aberdeen Aberdeenshire to Robert and Emily Gunn of Aberdeen, husband of Williamina Gertrude Fraser Gunn, of Aberdeen. Died 1 April 1942 aged 31 years as the result of enemy action over the Grand Harbour, Malta. Wills and Admin, Ancestry. His residence was 45 Sunnybank Place, Aberdeen. His effects went to his widow.


F095 FREDERICK CHARLES EAGER. Able Seaman P/JX183336 Royal Navy on HMS Penelope. Born 7 August 1914 at Brighton Sussex to William Henry and Eva Florence Dorothy Eager, nee Hubl. Husband of Caroline Ivy Eager of Brighton Sussex. Died 5 April 1942 aged 27 at HM Dockyard, Malta as the result of enemy action.
His father William Henry Eager joined the Royal Sussex Regiment as Private 167 Royal Sussex on the 23 August 1914 at Chichester aged 22 years and 275 days, occupation general labourer. Previously served with the 3rd Territorial Royal Field Artillery. He was discharged after three months of engagement was considered as unfit for service under Para 392(iii)(c).


F095 DANIEL JOHN SOAMES. Marine PO/X4825 Royal Marines on HMS Penelope. Born 6 April 1920 at Brixton, London to William Daniel Henry and Edna Doris Soames, nee Banzhaf of Brixton London. Died 8 April 1942 aged 22 years at HM Dockyard Malta as the result of enemy action. On this day the ship sustained further significant damaged by near miss during air raid whilst still in dock but sailed from Malta the same day after further temporary repair.


F095 SIDNEY IVOR TANCOCK. (Mentioned in Despatches, (Posthumous)). Able Seaman D/SSX18317 Royal Navy on HMS Penelope Born 2 February 1912 at Axbridge, Somerset to Herbert James Tancock and Hannah Jane Tancock, of Weston-super-Mare Somerset. Died 8 April 1942 aged 30 years at HM Dockyard Malta. On this day the ship sustained further significant damaged by near miss during air raid whilst still in dock but sailed from Malta after further temporary repair.

Penelope was holed both forward and aft by near-misses during air attacks on Malta on 26 March. While in the island, she was docked and repaired at the Malta Dry Docks. Day after day she was attacked by German aircraft and the crew worked to fix a myriad of shrapnel holes, so many that she was nicknamed HMS Pepperpot; when these had been plugged with long pieces of wood,


F095 ALFRED ROBERT KEYLOCK. (Mentioned in Despatches, (Posthumous) Able Seaman P/J97691 Royal Navy on HMS Avon Vale. Born 18 January 1904 at St Marylebone to Alfred Walter and Hannah Elizabeth Keylock, nee Gaymer. 1911 residing with his parents and brother, Harold at 38 Devonshire Place Mews, Marylebone, London
Husband of Dorothy Eva Keylock, nee Crow of Leyton, Essex. Died 26 March 1942 aged 38 years on board his ship.
At 1632 hrs 50 JU 88s drop bombs on Grand Harbour. Various ships and on submarine were hit. Avon Vale was hit, damage not very serious. Three lost their lives on Avon Vale and one on HMS Legion.
Supplement to London Gazette dated 6 October 1942 Posthumously Mentioned in Despatches.


F095 WILLIAM HENRY WALLER. Sapper 2194398, 16 Fortress Coy, Royal Engineers. Born 1919 to Arthur John and Jessie Waller of Attleborough Nuneaton Warwickshire. Died 7 April 1942 aged 23 as the result of heavy concentrated enemy bombing on Valletta, Malta that day for nearly twenty-four hours. Many civilian and military badly injured and killed.


F095 JAMES IRVIN WARWICK Able Seaman C/JX151041, Royal Navy on HMS. Legion. Born 7th August 1921 at Annan, Dumfriesshire. Died 26 March 1942 aged 20 years at 45th General Hospital, Pembroke Garrison, Malta as the result of injuries received on the bombing and sinking of his ship the same day in the Grand Harbour, Malta. She was eventually refloated and resunk in deep water.

No 45 General Hospital (GH) arrived in May 1941 and was ready to admit patients in July 1941. No 45 GH opened at Pembroke Garrison Gymnasium while the Sandhurst Barrack Block St Patricks was converted into a hospital, which became No 45 GH.


F095 JOSEPH YANDLE. Able Seaman D/JX257824 Royal Navy on HMS Dulverton (L63). Born 31 December 1911 at Aberbargoed Monmouthshire to Rufus and Hannah Yandle. Husband of Iris Yandle of Argoed Monmouthshire. Died of his wounds 29 March 1942 aged 30 years at 45th General Hospital, Pembroke Garrison, Malta as the result of air raids from dawn 29 to dawn 30 March 1942 He may have died in action on his ship or on shore leave.
His father served as Private 11718 South Wales Borderers in the Great War and survived.

All at rest in Plot F Grave 95 Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta.
