I wonder if the SMLE No.1 Mk.3 is an Ishapore manufactured one used to replace No.4 Mk.1 battlefield losses or if perhaps not all British SMLEs had been upgraded at that point in the Far East since 1941, Ishapore not having the tooling for those parts as they opted to continue SMLE production and taking up cargo space shipping over upgrade parts for a perfectly functional rifle being deemed a waste of resources?
Quite an iconic picture. Funny how the modern infrastructure is laying there in tatters while the old traditional building is completely unimpressed.
Quite possibly. The 14th Army was very low on the list of priorities for the UK so it wouldn't surprise me in the least if older model rifles were commonplace.
