Metal detecting is a lot of fun. My only advice is go for rechargeable batteries. Places that consistently produce...
Soccer fields where the kids sit on the sidelines
School yards where kids cut up and scuffle
City parks around playground equipment where kids might hang upside down.
City swimming pool. Around here, the kids have to take a break after dinner. I've had good luck detecting around trees where there would be shadows at that time. I find stacks of coins where they were forgotten when the towels were picked up & they went back to swim.
A day after the carnival leaves town is good for all sorts of things. I've found rings & assorted jewelry - also gold in the form of a dental retainer. Must have been some fisticuffs there!
Oddest thing I've found - a pair of very thick glasses with gold frame. I was where an old house had been torn down in the public hunting area south of town & looking for old tools where the garage stood. Got a solid hit & there was gold!
I can't imagine how that person got by without the glasses - they were bullet proof thick!
I bought a deep detecting Garret to search for a stolen military payroll I researched for 7 years. I'm 75% sure it's out there...
In a canyon 8 miles long and half a mile wide. "Near a cave with a spring". There are multiple caves and multiple springs. I went out with my closest friend (shovel and metal detector in hand) & the enormity of the project smacked me in the mug. Even with the clues I had, it would take years of searching. All I can tell you is there are three places the loot isn't.
But the research was fun. I pored over microfilmed post returns from 3 forts during the Indian wars & that was interesting in itself.
