Can anyone tell me what the name of this piece is? She's on several royal navy ships I've visited, it's very funny it looks like R2d2 from the star wars.

It is installed at various times on the following types of RN ships: -
Type 22 Frigates
Type Frigates 23
Bulldark and Albion from LPD
LPH Ocean -
Invincible class 'bearers'
Destructors type 45
My observations are that the "sensor" was often located near the Comms / CESM mast, but not exclusively (eg Bulwark & Invincible class)

The ship you saw,HMS Portland ( F 78 ) has same or similar equipment as the image shows.See if you can find it here.
Hope this helps.

Phoenix, I looked at this layout and this sensor does not appear, it is located on the rwd mast above the 911 radar. It must be something very secret, because nowhere do you get the photo of this sensor. I just wanted to know his name.

Look at the photo, use the zoom.

Or maybe its just a minor object, like sirens/speakers or an auxilary equipment.I don't think that this thing could be crucial enough to be considered "very secret".If it did, then other military enthuaists all over the internet would try to find it out - and spread rumours about it.
Also,if its "very secret",it should not be exposed that much - people like you and I can easily notice it from far apart.

@Bombardier do you have any thoughts on this matter?

The fact is that when I observed this and started to search in English forums, I was banned because I was threatening their OPERATIONAL SAFETY, I did not understand. What I discovered is that it is called UAT-8 SCEPTER, but I could not get photos to associate the name with the image. It should be something developed especially for the English navy.

Operational Safety? Do those forums have anything to do with RN?

In some that I entered the majority of the personnel is of the active one of the navy royal. They called me a spy and everything. I have no connection with the Brazilian Navy. The guys are neurotic

Is this the guidance system for something like "Phalanx" the American navy uses as defense against anti ship missiles?

As I understand it, Phalanx guides a 30mm cannon shooting depleted uranium munitions. It's apparently a fine system that can accurately track objects with a small cross section - like missiles.

I think. I have never been on any kind of a ship. SW

From what I've been researching, it looks like a prototype IR defense system. The fact is they install and uninstall on several ships.
