Vietnam veteran was oldest soldier to die in Iraq

Vietnam War veteran Major Steven Hutchison, 60, has become the oldest member of the US armed forces to die in Iraq.

Maj Hutchison, from Scottsdale, Arizona, was killed on Sunday when a homemade bomb exploded near his vehicle in Al Farr.

He had wanted to re-enlist immediately after the September 11 attacks but his wife had opposed it.

"He was very devoted to the service and to his country," he said. "For somebody to go back into the military at 60 years old, obviously I didn't want him to do it, but he had a mind of his own and that's what he wanted to do. He's been a soldier his whole life."

Mr Hutchison said his brother never explained his motives for re-enlisting but said "I'm guessing it has something to do with them coming into our country and killing our people".

He said Maj Hutchison served in Afghanistan for a year after he re-enlisted, joining the 1st Infantry Division. He went to Iraq last October to lead a dozen-strong American team training Iraqi soldiers.

However, his mission was changed and he was sent to help secure Iraq's southern border.

Maj Hutchison, who married four times but had no children, was a psychology professor at several California universities and then worked at a private health care company before retiring a few years ago.

He will be buried alongside his fourth wife in Scottsdale in a ceremony next week, said his brother.

More than 4,290 members of the US military have died in the Iraq conflict since it began in March 2003.
