The following is real words from a real Confederate written after the war.
I found this in an old newspaper and it says:

The Rebel

I fought all through the Civil war,
I'm a rebel staunch and true;
I was under the gallant "Stonewall,"
Who was a soldier through and through.

We were whipped, I'm very sorry to say,
But I took it like a man;
Tis better to be whipped all day
Than to lack the proper sand.

One day when I was on duty,
('Twas in 1863 )
I saw a Yank's blue cap protruding
From behind a big oak tree.

I caught the glint of his rifle,
And the officer's medal he wore;
I raised my gun and fired !
He fell to rise no more.

I halted those thieving Yanks;
I even hate 'em now;
But the sight of that young fellow
Brought the sweat out on my brow.

For that young fellow was my son,
Who, thinking different from me,
Had joined the Union forces, and
Was fighting 'gainst Robert E. Lee.

I lifted up his bleeding head
And laid it on my knee;
He gazed into my eyes, and then
Fell dead beneath the tree.

Why should we have carried on that war,
Brother 'gainst brother and man 'gainst man;
For a house divided against itself,
Could surely never stand.
