Family of Gurkha killed in Afghanistan allowed to live in Britain

The family of a Gurkha soldier killed on a tour of duty in Afghanistan has been granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Nepalese Gurkha Colour Sergeant Krishnabahadur Dura died on Nov 15 last year. His family have been granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK

Colour Sergeant Krishnabahadur Dura, 36, a Nepalese Gurkha of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles died on Nov 15 last year when the vehicle he was travelling in was struck by an explosive device in Helmand province.

Following his death a campaign was launched urging the Home Office to allow Colour Sergeant Dura's widow Uma and two daughters indefinite leave to remain in Britain.

"His wife has long been settled here and both his children were born in Britain and go to school in Canterbury. This is therefore their home and I am very glad that their future here is now secure."

In January, Colour Sergeant Dura's two daughters presented the Prince of Wales with a garland of flowers during his visit to meet relatives of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR), stationed at Sir John Moore Barracks in Folkestone.

A UK Border Agency spokesman tonight said: "We have always been clear, where there is a compelling case soldiers and their families should be considered for settlement."
