Soldiers from 4th Battalion The Rifles (4 RIFLES) are halfway through a challenging light role infantry exercise on the Canadian prairie.Supported by units from across 1st Armoured Infantry Brigade, over 500 soldiers are braving the threat of extreme weather as they conduct Exercise Prairie Storm 4 at British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS).For 17 days, the troops will be exposed to whatever the autumn throws at them. Unlike many exercises conducted at BATUS, they do not have the luxury of armoured vehicles for shelter. Sleeping out in the open, they are living in austerity as they conduct training from section to company level. So far the weather has been kind, with temperatures rarely dipping below freezing. They often reach minus 9 degrees Celsius in Alberta during October. However, the climate is not the only challenge. Covering distances of up to 10 kilometres a day on foot, the rough terrain has been the greatest test to date.

Third Astute submarine HMS Artful makes successful maiden dive in Barrow

The Royal Navy’s latest hunter-killer submarine has successfully completed her maiden dive prior to sea trials in 2015.

HMS Artful, the third Astute class submarine being built by BAE Systems, underwent the so-called trim and incline test over two days to prove the boat’s safety and stability in the water.

The dive was undertaken in the dock on BAE Systems’ site in Barrow-in-Furness and involved a team of 80 personnel, including naval architects, engineers and Royal Navy crew members.

Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from the UK’s Royal Air Force are at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada this month to take part in one of the world’s leading air-to-air combat training exercises which begins this week. Red Flag is the United States Air Force’s premier air-to-air combat training event. Participants typically include both US and allied nations’ combat air forces. The exercise gives pilots the experience of multiple, intensive air sorties in the safety of a training environment

This year, as well as the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4’s from 6 Squadron based at RAF Leuchars, there will also be Tornado GR-4s and an E-3D Sentry from the UK. The Royal Australian Air Force are expected to send F-18s and an E-7. The allied nations will augment and perform alongside a contingent of US aircraft. In 2013, Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft acquitted themselves with flying colours at the event attracting widespread praise for their agility, flexibility and ability to deliver what was described as ‘high kinetic’ effect. The Eurofighter’s Defensive Aids Sub Systems (DASS) and the aircraft’s Mission Data were major contributors to the jet’s success. “We’re pretty much the envy of all the Typhoon pilots back home at the moment,” Typhoon pilot Flight Lt. Alex Thorne said. “A lot of people are excited to see what the Typhoon can do, but are really excited to see what our jet can do alongside and against some of the platforms here.”

August 15 2014.....RC-135 is a family of large reconnaissance aircraft built used by the United States Air Force and Royal Air Force to support theatre and national level intelligence consumers with near real-time on-scene collection, analysis and dissemination capabilities. Its sensor suite allows the mission crew to detect, identify and geolocate signals throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. The mission crew can then forward gathered information in a variety of formats to a wide range of consumers via Rivet Joint's extensive communications suite.

Royal Air Force Tornado jets, RC-135 Rivet Joint signals intelligent plane, Chinook helicopters, C-130J and C-17 Globe Master III transport aircraft are now in Cyprus ahead of carrying out humanitarian aid in northern Iraq, where hundreds of thousands of Yazidi are stranded on mountains to avoid being slaughtered by Islamic State (IS).

August 2014...

“Somewhere in the world NATO forces are patrolling a no-fly zone in order to prevent a hostile force from committing atrocities. A Royal Navy jet is targeted by a surface to air missile forcing the pilot to eject.” The traditional pyrotechnic fuelled Commando Assault finale to the RNAS Yeovilton Air Day began. As flying displays go it was continuous fast and furious action which included numerous specialist skills and disciplines such as abseiling and fast roping which when combined with the gunfire and pyrotechnics, provided a realistic and crowd pleasing show.

"No war is just..ask the infantry and ask the dead"...Ernest Hemingway...

The British show the ultimate respect for their fallen soldiers. May they all rest in peace.

Mourners react as a procession of hearses carrying the bodies of eight British soldiers killed in Afghanistan in a 24 hour period parade through the streets of Wootton Bassett, in Wiltshire, on July 14, 2009. The bodies of eight soldiers killed in Britain's bloodiest 24-hour period in Afghanistan were flown home on Tuesday as the head of the army said they had not died in vain. The families of the men, three of whom were 18-year-olds, were at the RAF Lyneham airbase in southwest England to see the coffins draped in the Union Jack flag carried slowly one by one from the transport plane. Thousands of people, including many soldiers, lined the streets of the nearby town of Wootton Bassett to pay their respects as the eight hearses were driven past, following a private ceremony at a chapel of rest for the families.
