Snipers in the Army, Royal Marines and RAF Regiment are to get a new rifle that will give them lethal precision at even greater distances under a £4 million contract.

Long Range Rifle L115A3.jpg

Long Range Rifle L115A3
Calibre: 8.59mm
Weight: 6.8kg
Length: 1300mm
Muzzle velocity: 936m/s
Feed: 5-round box
Effective range: 1100m plus

The British firm Accuracy International Ltd will supply 580 rifles with day telescopic sights for snipers across the Services, which will fire a larger calibre bullet than the existing weapon.

The new rifle is being supplied as part of a broader Sniper System Improvement programme to give UK snipers more power, precision and stealth than ever before. All-weather new advanced day and night sights will mean snipers can operate around the clock in difficult conditions, and laser technology will allow distant targets to be accurately located.

The L115A3 Long Range Rifle fires an 8.59mm bullet, heavier than the 7.62mm round of the L96, and less likely to be deflected over extremely long ranges.

Other elements of the Sniper System Improvement programme include night sights, spotting scopes, laser range finders and tripods, and will be sourced from a variety of suppliers taking the total procurement value to over £11 million.

Hardly a new design, merely an upgrade over existing L115's which have been in use for more than seven years.

They fulfill a different rôle and are to remain ufn.
Out of interest, WTF is .30 NATO ?

Although more of a yank term, Its a quicker way to say 7.62 NATO, Not to be confused with the .30-06 springfield/.30 carbine.

What's the word I'm looking for...?

Oh yes, that's it.

Bo*****S !

It's yet another of your fantasy terms isn't it ?
There is't a Septic around with the slightest Scooby about firearms that uses that term.
You're off on one again, please ask your mum to increase your dosage.

Now attempt to explain how 30-06 and 30 carbine (FFS !) could be confused with 7.62 NATO.
Mong.

I LIKE It................. Yet the current .30 Nato(7.62mm) ones are going be kept/sold?

Heckler & Koch has been awarded the US Army’s Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) with a potential USD44.5 million initial contract, according to a 1 April announcement. The German company’s US subsidiary bested seven other bids for the work, understood to be with its Heckler & Koch G28 (Gewehr-28) Designated Marksman Rifle, meant to supplement the army’s 7.62 mm M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS) fleet.

Ooookay. Where can I get an L115? Nowhere, I bet :( This year I´ve started to sock a little money away for a sniper´s kit (I already have cool glasses and tactical gloves and about a dozen pouches  ),
either the Remington 700 Police
Rem%20700%20Police.jpg

or a civilian version of M14
PEO_M14_EBR.jpg

Both are largely used, the 700 has got a rather unpopular trigger issue, it goes off by itself sometimes when loaded. Some police men and women have been injured or killed as a result of that. And the company has law issues to solve...
