60 lb RP-3 Rocket Projectile 3-inch

A black and white photo of a British soldier operating a 60 lb RP-3 Rocket Projectile 3-inch

Hmm I thought at first sight that this may be a variation on the 'Blacker bombard' but now I am not quite sure?
I will keep looking around for more info on this one

Nope it is not a Bombard design it is in fact a 60 lb RP-3 (Rocket Projectile 3-inch) I believe they were usually fired from the air like on the Typhoon etc but they were also used on the ground.

Here is some info and a good link
Lieutenant Robert Boscawen, from British 1st Armoured Battalion, Coldstream Guards Armoured Division and his friend Captain Dermot Musker, were the first to add the 60lb rocket firing capability to a Sherman tanks. The Rocket Launcher Rails Mk I and RP-3 (Rocket Projectile 3-inch) rockets were obtained from an RAF Typhoon aerodrome near Nijmegen. Captain Musker had heard that the Canadians had fitted some Typhoon rockets to a tank as an experiment but had never developed the idea.

I think it is an actual weapon system that was used on the Sherman Tulip and Cromwell Tulip adaptations

here is another link that actually contains the pic you posted. Interesting stuff @sas

...this pic looks to me as a trial situation, they must have liked what they saw and went ahead and mounted them on their turrets.

...great stuff Firefox,I did see the rocket in the tube and so had my suspicions.
