I have just sent this picture to my Nephew who is Royal Navy Retired, he may be able to tell us however if its a secret bit of kit he may not, STANDBY!
Well its an optical pod, It would house different lens i.e infra red, themal, normal and they used to use them to track targets etc.
So it would seem its a generic Optical housing that could be used for many different devices.
