Battle of New Orleans

Note:Sure hope the subject matter of this song doesn't rub anybody the wrong way;it's not meant to.The fella who did this song-Johnny Horton-also did "Sink the Bismark" so no real stong anti-British sentiment was intended by him or me.Writing from memory so it may not be perfectly correct.

The Battle of New Orleans Johnny Horton

Well in 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Col. Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we fought the Bloody British at the town of New Orleans

Chorus:
Well
We
Fired our guns an the British kep a-comin,
They wasn't nigh as many as they was awhile ago,
Fired once more an they commenced a-runnin
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
Well they ran through the briers and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast the hounds coudn't catch em,
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Well "Ole Hickory" said we could take em by surprise
If we didn't fire our muskets till we looked em in the eyes.
We held our fire an we seen the British come,
And there musta been a hundred of em beatin on the drums.
They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring;
We stood behind our cotton bales and didn't say a thing.
We held our fire till we seen their faces well
Then opened up our squirrel guns an really gave em...

Chorus

We fired our cannon till the barrel melted down.
Then we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.
We filled his head with cannonballs, an powdered his behind,
And when we set the powder off THE 'GATOR LOST HIS MIND!

Chorus

Just figured some of you younger guys might not have heard this song.Don't figure it got all that much air time in the UK.

Hi Guys, that song was a massive hit in the U.K. for our greatest ever skiffler, Lonnie Donegan in the 50's. Johnnie Horton also got his version in the U.K. charts.
Derrick.
