Hello Highland Sniper,
You can always tell when you have a good question, Himself isn't straight in with an answer!
C'mon, someone must have an inkling.
Can you give any more clues?
Derrick.

A reef, a fjord, and Alfred The Great is what I've been working on, and the answer I've come up with, is - nothing.

OK guys, you asked for it................
On 12th Nov. 1944, the German pocket battleship Tirpitz was attacked and sunk in Tromso fjord by Lancaster bobmbers from No.s 9 and 617 Sqns. RAF using the 12,000lb "Tallboy" bomb.
After the war, the Tirpitz was raised by scrap dealers, and part of one of the bulkheads which was painted with a naval scene and the words 'Gegen England' (Against England) was presented to RAF Bomber Command by the Royal Norwegian Air Force and placed on display at RAF Binbrook.
At that time both 9 and 617 sqns. were based at Binbrook. Who actually sunk the Tirpitz has always been a matter of dispute between the squadrons and the bulkhead has "changed" hands numerous times over the years, especially since the flying units were later dispersed to separate bases.
The matter was finally resolved in 2002 when the bulkhead door was finally presented to the Bomber Command Museum.
