EXTRA PAY

There are several jobs in the military that draws an extra pay over the base pay, that's based on your rank and time-in-grade. As a paratrooper, I was paid an extra $55/mo. Jump Pay. While serving in Vietnam, everybody was paid an additional $65/mo. Combat Pay, or Hazardous Duty Pay. Members of helicopter crews and gunners were paid $55 [?] flight pay. Also, Air Force flight crews. I'm sure Navy divers were probably paid extra pay. Pretty much any job with a bit of danger to it.

Last Saturday I met an Army SSGT [E-6] that was at the zoo with his wife and 2 children. We had taken our grandson there. His MOS was something to do with Communications. He was home on leave before leaving for Iraq. As I talked with him, I found out that he was Airborne qualified and I asked him about jump pay. $125! I was amazed. He also said that Combat Pay was now $150! Unfortunately, he was no longer with an Airborne unit, so wasn't getting the Jump Pay. Be Safe, Sarge.

So, is this the same in your country's branches of the military? If so, how much? EAGLEDRIVER, was this the same Combat Pay amount that was paid in Desert Storm?

Correct. Also don't forget one also gets clothing and housing allowances, separate rations, separation pay, and a few others that I don't remember the names of. Also basic pay for housing, travel pay. It adds up. Especially if you're married.

We had something called pro pay, proficiency pay. You had be an E-5, over 2 years in service and take a test. It was $30/mo. I think you had to retest every year after that but I dunno, I never stayed that long. :cool:

We had LOA (Local Overseas Allowance) when on posting abroad, war or peace. I received extra pay for the job I was doing (signals security amongst other sneaky things) which added up to quite a lot. As a L/Cpl I was earning more than my troop commander, a Lt! Easy life! I was never married in the army so never got into the gravy train of accomodation etc!
