Historian Prof. Richard Holmes wrote this book following a visit to the 1 Princess of Wales Royal Regiment Battle Group in Iraq, in 2004. He is also a long-serving TA soldier and at that time, was Colonel of the regiment.
He compiled the book from first-hand testimonies and photographs of the soldiers involved, which vividly captures the day-to-day lives and experiences of the modern British soldier, including the most prominent story of Private Johnson Beharry V.C., who was a member of the regiment, together with numerous other acts of bravery, of routine, mundane duties which suddenly become life-or-death situations. Every time they left their bases in Basra or Al-Amarah, they invariably were engaged by insurgents. 3 members of the battle group did not survive the tour.
His deep affection for his regiment, its soldiers and of the British Army is highly evident from reading this book. Although the events within it are now some 4 years old, they are still relevant today.
Anyone who wants to know what life is like for the modern British Soldier should read this book. I would make it compulsory reading for those who seek to criticise or disrespect our soldiers.
