Norwegian soldier killed in Afghanistan
A Norwegian solider from the Telemark Batallion, serving with ISAF in Afghanistan, was killed when a military convoy was attacked with rockets near Kabul Sunday evening.
Another soldier was injured, while two others in the vehicle escaped unhurt.
The attack occured on one of the main roads leading into Kabul, the Jalabad Road, 1.5 kilometres from the Norwegian "Camp Invicta".
The vehicles were returning from a routine mission in one of Kabul's police presincts when they came under fire.
-This is a very open stretch of road, where military vehicles are relatively vulnerable, says NRK's Asia correspondent, Philip Lothe.
According to the Norwegian Military Command, altogether three rockets were fired against the Norwegian convoy, and one unarmoured MB-290 was hit.
A seriously injured soldier was brought to the German field hospital nearby, where he later died from his wound.
Another soldiers with less serious wounds was also brought to the same hospital, but was later released.
-It is with sorrow I have received the news that a Norwegian soldier was killed while on an assignment from the world community, NATO and Norway in Afghanistan, says Thorstein Skiakaer, Chief of Joint Operations Headquarters.
Two men have been arrested, suspected of having fired the rockets, NRK reports.
Around 230 Norwegians are serving with the international ISAF forces in Afghanistan.

REGIMENTAL PRAYER
Almighty, merciful, and loving Father,
you are the one who hears all our prayers and grants our petitions.
We ask you to remember, as we do,
the tremendous sacrifice made by those who went before us.
They have given their lives so that we might live and breathe freely.
We ask you to receive them into your hands.
Father, give us the strength and wisdom to learn from their example,
to uphold freedom and life at home and around the world.
Keep us vigilant as we guard the frontiers of freedom.
Give our leaders the wisdom and the strength to lead well.
Grant all of us courage and confidence.
Be, for all of us, troopers, a wise counsel in keeping peace
and a strong shield for us against our enemies.
Oh heavenly Father, give us the determination
that the peace and freedom won at such a high price be lasting!
Father, hold all of the troopers in the palm of your almighty hand
and protect them in the shadow of your wings.
Amen.
