British troops returning from war zones are being subjected to
'enormous pressure' in poor accommodationn and no time to recover
between missions, Britain's most senior military figure has warned.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, the Chief of the Defence Staff, has joined
the growing row over the lack of support for servicemen and women
returning after risking their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Poor standards of accommodation, combined with the fact that servicemen
and women only granted brief periods with their families before returing to
duty, are all contributing to increasing disaffection within the army.
He warned treatment of troops means the covenant between the Armed
Forces and the British people is 'under stress'.
"Some of them come back into accommodation that is less than salubrious,"
he said. "They come back to relatively short periods at home, they don't
get to spend enough time with their families, they don't get enough time to
spend training and all of that creates an enormous amount of pressure for
them back home."
Sir Jock - who has just returned from inspecting troops in southern Iraq -
also renewed calls for more public appreciation of the returning troops'
efforts - warning they feared their role was misunderstood.
