If your image of an RAF fighter pilot involves a Biggles-style leather flying
helmet and a billowing white silk scarf, the latest headgear for combat pilots
will look distinctly alien.

Pilots flying the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter when it enters service a few
years from now will take to the skies with an astonishing array of futuristic
technology encasing their heads - enabling them to see right through their
own aircraft fuselage to the ground below.
A series of cameras on the outside of the stealth warplane feed high-
resolution images into the helmet, including infra-red images at night, which
are then projected onto the inside of the pilot's visor.
