A memorial to the Dambusters squadron has been pelted with flour and
eggs in a vandalism attack in the days leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

Residents in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire say they are "disgusted" by vandals
who defaced the memorial to 617 Squadron.

Some villagers want to have extra lighting and CCTV installed to deter
further attacks.

Stuart Adams, community beat officer, said the attack on the war memorial
was "a despicable act".

It is unfortunate that this is a sign of the times.

In South Africa the vandalism is on such a huge scale that it is totally uncontrolable.

The Boer War markers have had the Bronze rondels stolen by the thousands. In many cases the Iron Cross on which they were mounted have been dug up, or where they were cemented in place, have been cut off at the base. Hundreds of memorial stones to regiments have been smashed.

I photographed the WWI/WWII Military graves in Simonstown some years ago. Some months later the brass plates were stolen. In the case of metal markers, it is poverty. In the case of stonework it is vandalism.

I have a 4,000 km trip planned for December covering several thousand names but no idea how many Headstones and Memorials I will find intact..
