Whenever we surf the web, we get cookies, wanted and unwanted. There is an option in Windows to remove cookies and temp int. files. What this doesn't do, is remove the history index, which has a list of sites visited etc.
Also when programmes are uninstalled, bits and pieces of them are left in the registry.
The programme I recommend anyone to use is CCLeaner, available free from this site.
http://www.ccleaner.com/update/?v=2.01.507&l=1033
It removes all the objects I have listed, empties the recycle bin, and other unwanted items.
In addition, for those who use system restore on the XP, it is a good idea to occasionally to turn it off, since everytime you turn on your computer, the folder that holds the restore files increases in size, up to and above the setting. Any unwanted incursions into your computer, such as virii are also saved in the restore files.
Turning your computer off, with system restore disabled, clears the restore files from your computer. You can restart it, do a virus check etc. and then turn on system restore again.
