Some people may experience problems reducing the size of their images if you go to the link at the bottom of this post you can download a trial version of Web Graphics Optimiser. I use it myself and often compress images of lets say 200 kb's down to 80 or 90 kb without any serious loss of image quality.
The benefits;
1/will allow you to upload more images to us
2/images will upload quicker
give it a try

Another point to bear in mind is the actual image size. Most folks these days have screen resolutions of 1024x768 in day-to-day use, therefore the larges image viewable on a forum such as this is 800x600 pixels - anything else will run off the RHS of the screen and result in horizontal scrolling.
If saving an image as a JPEG file in PhotoShop, Paintshop pro or similar, select compression factor of 6, and your file sizes will normally be within the 200kb limit.
I know zip about reducing images etc and use Microsoft image composer. In your humble opinion (!!) is this web graphics thing better to use? I'm downloading it now but have no idea about what's going to come out at the other end if you catch my drift!
Downloaded prog and can make head nor tail of it! How do I reduce the byte size - just clicking on one of my stored pics - the byte size is massive! Help please!

1/ open program
2/open image via program
3/program will auto give you its first compressed version of image
4/if you want to see how it will look compressed further click the next number along and see what its like.
once you have chosen the image right click on the image and save as normal.
I usually find the first compressed option is fine though
hope this helps
Question about pic sizes:
In Windows XP (home) when I place my cursor on a pic thumbnail I get a little message that gives the pic's dimensions and size.
So, do I understand correctly that if the dimensions are 600 x 800 or less, then the pic will not cause horizontal scrolling and is thus suitable for posting?

If you are posting an image in the gallery the width or height would not matter as long as the width does not exceed 1000 pixels wide, the software automatically resizes the pic to 900 pixels in width. If you are posting an image within the forums then I would suggest a width of 400 or 500 pixels.
Please remember though that pics in the Galleries must be related to the Military and pics in the forums must be essential to the development of that discussion, eg picture quiz, joke etc.
Okay, if the pic dimensions are 800 x 600 the 800 = width and 600 = hieght, is that right? The first number is width and second number is height?

Yes thats right buddy. :D
Anybody use IrfanView? In my opinion this is the best FREEWARE image viewer/converter for Win9x/NT. Now I use this viewer/converter and I compress images of lets say 200 kb's down to 30-50 kb without any serious loss of image quality in screen ofcours.
You can download this program from here
