Four British soldiers have been wounded in a firefight near al-Amarah in Iraq.
The patrol in the village of Qal At Sahil came under heavy fire from machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, the Ministry of Defence said.

Al-Jazeera television reported two Iraqi civilians were killed in the incident on Friday, and said Shia militia were involved.

The British soldiers were taken to a military hospital near Basra with non-life-threatening injuries.

The MoD could not confirm details of any civilian deaths or the nature of the attackers.

The Army has launched an investigation into a firefight in Iraq which left seven British soldiers wounded.
The violence broke out on Friday while the troops were on patrol in the village of Qal At Sahil, south of Amarah, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldiers came under heavy fire after arresting a suspect they believed had shot at them.

The MoD said it would hold an inquiry partly because three Iraqi civilians were believed to have been killed.

Four British soldiers were taken to a military hospital near Basra and three were treated at the British Army base.
