It was a pipeline with oil. Allies was put down this pipeline in sea when they landing in Normandy

PLUTO (the Pipeline UnderThe Ocean) was laid from the Isle of Wight to Cherbourg (in four pipe lines), pumping stations were set up and vital petrol came literally pouring into Normandy.

The pipeline was layed by HMS Holdfast The World's First "Pipe Lay" Barge.
The pipeline consisted of a flexable hollow cable wrapped around an emense metal floating drum. As this metal drum was towed across the Channel, the pipe unrolled and sank to the bottom of the seabed

You can see a picture of HMS Holdfast Here http://www.militaryimages.net/photopost/showphoto.php/photo/1366

I see I'm going to have to go back to being cryptic. Straight questions are obviously too easy for you all.
Incidentally, I'm sure I read somewhere that the original concept of P.L.U.T.O. was as a defensive weapon in the event of an invasion of England across the Channel. The idea being that oil could be released from a pipeline and set alight, so that any invasion fleet would be faced literally with a sea of fire.
Anyone else heard of this?
Derrick.

Yes derrick I heard that, but after seeing your question I decided to look into it. i didnt find anything at all about that, and all the articles stated it was designed to produce fuel for the invasions.

maybe and this is just a theory, a secondary plan if all did not go well they would use it for the purpose you stated. however while im writing i do remember something else about the defensive theory and infact saw it on Discovery chanell, If I remember right any fuel that was to be lit in case of pending invasion was situated on all the coastal areas and close in to the beach.

perhaps other viewers can shed some more light on the topic.

Yep yep, the lighting of fuel in the sea just off the british coasts had nothing to do with P.L.U.T.O. P.L.U.T.O was simply to supply fuel to the allies during the Normandy Landings. 8)

Thanks Guys.
I've read the article on P.L.U.T.O., just a little bit complex for me, glad I only have to go to Asda!!!
Cheers,
Derrick.
